Hi,

I planning on updating my TV within the next month of two. My aim is to get a LCD/Plasma/LED TV running Freeview HD with the ability to record, pause live TV etc. Im aware i could purchase a separate TV and twin it with a FreeviewHD plus box. However, i was wondering if there was a TV out there that already had FreeviewHD plus built in? Or if i were the purchase a FreeviewHD TV, is there an easy way of giving this TV the ability to record, etc?

If anyone could help, that would be great.

Cheers

A few of the recent Samsung TVs have the ability to record Freeview HD to a separate USB hard disk, like the Samsung UE40C8000. If you only need to record the occasional program, you could use a USB stick / pen drive (a 16 GB model would give you roughly 3-4 hours of HD recording or 7-8 hours of SD recording). You'd need to ensure this USB stick had a fast enough performance level to allow recording though (as it states in the manual). However, any more than this would need a proper USB hard disk which would need to be placed somewhere - although they're smaller than an external PVRs, it does beg the question of whether it's worth it given the extras you'll get with an external PVR e.g. twin tuners to record two programmes at once etc.

What sort of budget are you looking at?

An iMac with Elgato Eye TV would do this and includes a built in DVD player, unfortunately you are restricted to a 27" screen and it won't play Blu-Ray.

....also includes a computer.

Cheers!

Budget would be upto £1500 to purchase what system would work out best. As professorhat has said, i dont wish to lose the functionality of a PVR. I was hoping that there would be a TV out there that had a PVR built in. If i wasnt to restrict myself to HD, is there a TV that has the functionalities of a PVR built in?

Why not purchase a regular TV and attach an Acer Aspire Revo* to the back, with a Freeview HD USB stick? Then you'd have an all-in-one with not only PVR but full internet and PC functionality. And it will be a lot cheaper too.

*Or build something to your exact specification from here.

Thanks AL13N, another great tease.

Actually the one thing i wouldnt want in my ideal All in one TV would be full internet use. It may just me be, but i dont see that the future for TVs. Yes, widgets and apps that help improve you TV watching, offer opportunities the socialise with friends over TV programs, films, sports etc. But i think as for having the full internet, maybe not. but thats a discussion for another day and another forum. But thanks for that link, im going to look into those anyway, they look interesting little comps.

Cheers again!
