I just finished watching '2001: A Space Odyssey' for the first time. I was very impressed with the blu ray picture. Technically and visually I found the film to be superb, with wonderful music and some beautiful shots, but whilst I enjoyed the film (in so far as I understood it), I was left pretty confused as to what exactly happens from the 'Jupiter and beyond the infinite' part until the end.

Any ideas/ explanations would be welcome. Was anybody else confused by this film?

Perhaps you next need to watch "2010: The Year We Make Contact".

Just about everyone I think

I watched it at the movies in wide screen years ago

and agree is a fantastic film to watch but the story at the end is the let down

There was some articles in the papers at the time with peeps second guessing it all

Havent seen 2010 Next on the list

if you want to be a proper geek then there are the books to get into and loads of discussion forums on the net.

i havent read any of the books or seen the follow up film (though i will get round to it due to my own geekiness) i think its about his journey to the next stage of human evolution (the 'starchild' as its been named). i think this starchild is supposed to be the astronaut reborn (having been rapidly aged)

supposedly the monoliths are the pinnacle of evolution (implying they are alive or at least sentient) and pass on knowledge thru physical contact accelerating the evolutionary process

personally i dont think you're supposed to understand it entirely and part of the fun is the mystery and discussion that follows

i love the film whereas the OH thinks its the worst film she's ever seen - i agree with your comments tho, the blu-ray is a brilliant transfer

Seems to imply a greater intellect out there somewhere or perhaps a greater entity. The beauty of the film(s) is that you can use your own imagination to create the story in your own mind.

Then of course some astronomers see Jupiter as the guardian planet of the inner planets of the Solar system due to its vast size and gravitational pull.

So perhaps fact and fiction eventually start to merge.

I saw Mullholland Drive when it was first released on dvd a few years ago and yes, that one also left me very confused.

Years ago I had an LP of Arthur C. Clarke reading the last chapters of his novelization of 2001. The book explains the ending, although he says Stanley Kubrick's explanation may have been different (not that he would ever have explained it, of course) ...

A friend of mine said that he was disappointed with the film. He said there was a lack of aliens, and was deeply dissatisfied that the "giant baby at the end" didn't blow up any planets or kill anyone.

He likes Transformers 2.

You should perhaps read `The Sentinel` by A.C.Clarke, being the book upon which the film 2001 was based. Note` The film` the book 2001 was actually written afterwards. Then you could read 2010, and even to get really confused try 3010!

Concensus seems to be 1. There is no true answer-write your own.
or 2. The monoliths are sent by superior life form to `test` homosapien.

Well, sort of but not really, Clarke co-wrote the script with Kubrick and carried on developing it into the novel.

Then you could read 2010, and even to get really confused try 3010!

You'd have missed out 2061 if you did that. And you would be confused by 3010, because it's 3001 but you won't be confused by the book, just utterly disappointed, it's one of the worst things Clarke ever wrote, really, truly dreadful!

I won't say too much but there are similarities with Independance Day which just totally ruins it!
