That would be a whole new system for me, no idea what it would be, I could go window shopping and work something out but would it sound that much different with the law of diminishing returns etc? Not sure it would be worth it to be honest.

This. I think I could easily unbalance my system, or spend money without making an appreciable or worthwhile difference. In my current circumstances, I wouldn't even consider spending money of that kind even if I had it spare, but were I in the position to, I would still be very wary. I've had more expensive kit, and I believe the law of diminishing returns sets in quite early, especially when you take the demands of 'normal' living into account. I think perhaps the only thing I might do, is put together a good quality headphone rig with CD and streaming sources, so that I could have a second listening location, but that wouldn't require anything like £1k, never mind 5.

You can easily spend £1K on a good pair of planars and a quality headphone amp would notch up £££'s further but agree, an excellent sounding headphone rig can be had for less than £1K.

I think it's easier to get great sound from headphones within a tighter budget, due to the absence of room interaction, though of course there's always room for improvement.

Agreed. For me if I was able to move to a detached property then it might be worth investing in a new higher quality/more expensive system with some bigger speakers. I'd probably start with a good amp and floor standing speaker pairing and a matching cd player- one of the best Marantz ones I expect - but I doubt I would need to spend £5k .

I'd like to try a couple of different amps such as the Lyngdorf tdai 2210 and 3400 and the Atoll IN 300 and 400 just to compare against my current Arcam SA30.

I'd also like to try some Proac D48's, could probably get 2nd hand within budget although I'd maybe have to upgrade my Arcam to get the full benefit out of them which would blow the budget.

That said, after 2 years of changing / upgrading bits I'm pretty happy with my current setup, I'd have to hear a noticeable difference in sound to make it worthwhile and with diminishing returns I'm not convinced I would.
