Our bumper July 2009 competition is now online, so enter here to be in with a chance of winning Arcam's superb AVR600 multichannel receiver and a Solo Mini system with Muso speakers, together worth £4600.

Wouldn't it be lovely, if like the Grado's this one goes to a regular or at least genuine forum user. Shame that nothing can be done to promote forum users vs. professional competition players.

Andrew Everard:As ever, the competition is open to anyone who cares to enter.

If you live in the UK yes the rest of the world can't enter this comp....

As is the case with all our competitions.

If you want to further limit the geographic range of entrants, I can give you a postcode?!

Thanks for the Avatar - I feel like a grown-up now. 😉

Hi,

What about the following:

Those users/subscribers who have joined since July 2008 can enter the competition to win the whole prize - anyone outwith that bracket (and geographically permitted) can enter to win the speakers on their own? The qualifying date can be (as an example) a year previous to the date of the competition.

A sort of 2 level competition to reward long time fans of the mag/those who subscribe?

Should be easy enough for those who eat fancy biscuits to organise?? ;-))

Rewarding long term subscribers was mentioned on another post - would this idea placate them?

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

Nice idea, but I'm guessing the good people at Arcam have donated this mega-prize in the hope that as many people as possible enter, so as to raise awareness of their kit, rather than rewarding us lot. The competition made me have a quick look at Arcam's site - I wish I could afford some of their stuff. (although if I win, my wife will have a hissy fit when I tell her I need to re-upgrade my speaker package to match!!!).

Why is that so?

Simply put, there's a distinction between a "pure game of chance" and a "game of skill". Lotteries, raffles, luck-dips etc generally require a licence from a licensing authority (gaming or lotteries commission), whereas in the UK (and in Ireland) a game of skill (where the entrant has to exercise some degree of skill based on personal knowledge or semi-complete facts) is permitted without a licence. That's why there's always a tie-breaker or (quite easy) question to most competitions. Because What Hi-Fi is beamed into lots of countries with lots of different rules, I presume they don't take the chance on being fined in foreign jurisdictions.

That said, there is a line of jurisprudence that says the question in a game of skill to make it a game of skill mustn't be too easy, so as to make it a sure-fire cinch for everyone to be a potential winner (e.g. what colour do you most associate with oranges - (a) orange; (b) purple; or (c) photocopier).

Yes, I'm afraid competitions are only open to residents in the UK. Apart from the shipping challenge, laws and rules are different around the world making it impossible to administer. Very sorry folks.

Plus, I only speak a couple of languages, English and some other form of communication gabba which becomes more fluent after too many glasses of wine. Some of you may be familiar with it.
