Bring them back I say :p , not only do they look cool, they had a genuine use if you like to push you amp , the vu would tell you if you a getting to that dangerous clipping state, wouldnt they ?

even budget amps in the seventies and eighties had them, surely its not a cost thing,

I like those big onkyo ones

it does seem they only get put on 'reference' power amps now, thisis my point, whereas they were commonplace on intergrates a a couple decades ago,

marantz even put in ocilloscopes in their tuners :O , which seems a bit OTT , love this u tube clip, good choice of music.... I bet some of this stuff sounds better than a lot of todays offerings,

One of the best meters in the business, though not necessarily VU:-

They're a bit superfluous really, and aren't really of much real use. I'm sure if more manufacturers produced retro looking amps with VU meters, they'd sell pretty well. Technics' pre/powers did very well back in the 90's and early 2000's, partly because they had a Technics badge on them, and partly because of the way they looked. The ones with VU meters were very sought after.

VU meters did not show if you are close to clipping. To do that you need a PPM - peak programme meter - the sort used in recording studios. A better solution would be a LED that lights if signal levels are too high - common on pro audio amps and stage gear. VU meters on domestic amps were primarily for decoration.

I've posted this before but you can get this landed in the UK for about £1k.

It is rated at 80 wpc Pure Class A, which it isn't, fine amp for the money though.

Mention cookware to my wife and I'd likely end up wearing it. :)

She would, however, very much like the fine, and somewhat expensive, workmanship of the D' Agostino.

That's women for yah! :)

I bought one of the beasts a few years ago for £500 off of ebay, my wife baulked at the sheer size of the thing!. I absolutely loved the sound it made and if we were ever burgled I was pretty sure they would need a fork lift truck to move it but 6 months later it was back on ebay :(

Oh, and as much as I like the amp it was the remote that was butt ugly!

VU meters are back. I've been waiting for years to see them again, i listen to my music with my eyes open so for me it is very important how the amplifier looks. The upcoming Yamaha AS-S2100 looks fantastic and will be priced around £1600, much less than that great looking AS-S3000 or Onkyo's power amp with massive VU.

Got a JVC hifi system in the family house, still works. This JVC system is at least 28yrs old. Nice big meters on the amp, 4 way speaker system with turn table& cassette. Still sounds so good. Any time I travel home alway listen to the system & even wonder sometimes if HIFI is actually sounding worse than it did many years ago.

EAch time I ask the old man if I can take the system & get him a brand new one the answer is always no.
