Just like a DAC is used to transfer the signal of music. These days lots of equipment we buy regarding home cinema are always talking about the different upscaling chipsets they have within their units. So why just like the creation of seperate DAC boxes are there no external upscaling boxes? It seems to make perfect business sense for companies to produce them given the benifits they can generate. Or am I missing a step...

There are separate scalers available - they were around before products started incorporating upscaling and are still around (but generally v.specialist/pricey). More common in the custom-install market, for all those lovely racks of kit....

There are dedicated upscaling boxes on the market. Anchor Bay (one of the best upscalers) has this....

If only your link was a "Blue Clicky One" instead of the old Copy & Paste method I had to process - You would've won top prizes Gerrard! :)

Reading the reviews of the DVDO EDGE now might be worth it for £600 if it can deliver an improvement

Thx

I notice it has 2 outputs, splitting the signal. I oftened wondered why there isnt more of these type of boxes on the market. There seem to be plenty of 2in/1out but not the other way round and many are not familiar brands.

Any plans by the What Hi-Fi team to review some of this kit, splitters etc?

We have reviewed the odd splitter in the past. As always with our tests, however, we need to be sure a product is reasonably widely available for us to review it. I'll flag this thread up to the test team so they can do some research....

You are a hard task masker Vinny!

The Anchor Bay scaling is supposed to be sublime but I think £600 is a lot. When you consider that an AV receiver with hdmi upscaling can be had for that (Onk 875). However, if you are happy with your receiver and just want the extra scaling... I think the latest Arcam receiver uses the same scaler.

Gerrard - I think your correct. I think if anything its always best putting that money towards a step up in the AV reciever. Thx again
