Why I despise Phil Collins

And any Genesis stuff. His solo stuff is indistinguishable from Genesis tracks. What's the point of releasing a solo album if it's just copies of all his previous rubbish? At least with Mike Rutherfords solo stuff he brings in other vocalists, such as Paul Carrack (who I think he's great) to make it sound as if he's tried something different.

Even half decent tracks such as 'In The Air Tonight' and 'I Missed Again' could just be other Genesis tracks taken from any of their albums.

I can't stand the man and his cheap, unimaginative copies 😤 😡

The gorilla bashing the drums to the beat of 'In the Air Tonight' is iconic and is everything Phil Collins isn't, Funny.

Well, if he writes, or helps to, write the tracks, plays the drums, and sings, it's all going to sound pretty samey. He may even produce both as well, which just increases the similarities. Producers tend to sound quite samey - look at Pete Waterman :ROFLMAO:
That's not true about producers sounding samey. Look at the different groups Steve Lilleywhite has produced: Big Country, U2, The Pogues, The Rolling Stones.... you can't say they all sound the same, can you?

Elvis Costello produced Squeeze 'East side Story'. None of those tracks sound like Costello. Then he went onto co-produce Maccas album, 'Flowers In the Dirt'....

And so the list goes on...

Not all, of course, and I didn't mean to imply all. Probably depends on how much influence the producer is having. With some bands, it's much more than others. Most producers don't write the music, sing, and play an instrument on the album.

I can't quite say the same, as I grew up with Grandmaster Flash / Grandmaster Melle Mel And The Furious Five - I can listen to their stuff all day long.
I've always quite liked the Sugarhill Gang's Rappers Delight and Shannon's Let The Music Play.
But they were said by some to be the first rap and hip-hop tracks....so they've got a lot to answer for 🤨

Never been too keen on Phil Collins' stuff (apart from Follow You Follow Me).
But then I'm not over the moon on anything from people described as "iconic superstars", such as Sting, Rod Stewart, Adele.
As for Elvis P and Bruce S....neither my King nor my Boss those two.

If you despise, just switch off quickly.

This is on the car radio. I just mute it until the song (term used loosely) is finished.

I purchased 'Face Value' album in the early 80s. Haven't played it in decades.

I love what Noel Gallagher said about Collins. He called him the antichrist 😂

I guess the OP is not familiar with 70's Genesis which was a very different beast from the band from 1981 onwards. I have had huge admiration for Phil as a singer and drummer but it all went horribly wrong when Phil discovered he could write pop songs. So yeah from Abacab onwards Genesis seemed to become an offshoot for Phil, I don't think that's how it really was, its just that many people discovered Phil and then discovered Genesis which was putting the cart before the horse if you see what I mean. So yes for me Genesis 1970 to 1980 were one of my favourite bands and their 70's albums remain classics to this day, what happened to them in the 80's was tragic.

I am familiar with early Genesis. Peter Gabrielle is far better than 'spam head' Collins. Far more talented than Collins IMO, but didn't put himself around in interviews, film... like Collins.

Collins and Genesis I place alongside groups like later Fleetwood Mac. They appeal to those without any musical imagination.

I don't like later Genesis stuff that much but I listen to Trick of the Tail quite often. One track is a bit suspect but the rest are excellent. I make little defence for albums after Abacab.

Basically, if I don't enjoy, I don't listen to stuff more than twice.

Going to see Mike and the Mechanics soon which has been a good gig in the past.
