Why do I get sound from sub woofer when watching movies but not CDs? HELP!!

Hi, hope you can help! I have just bought the Onkyo 905 and connected it all up but when listening to Cds I cannot hear the sub woofer at all. However, when I put on a flim with 5.1 surround the sub kicks in. I have checked everything I think should be checked but I'm stumped. My speakers are Monitor Audio and I was reading something about crossover (not sure what this really means). The crossover for the Monitor Audios fronts are 30-38 Htz. If you can help I would be really graetful!

Simply because there's no separate LFE component in the stereo sound coming from your CDs, only left and right channels. To get round this, select the 'Double Bass' function - manual, p96.

Thanks very much! I knew it had to be simple! Do most people do this or is it considered to give an unnatural sound?
