Anyone got experience of both the Sony BDP-S760 and the Pioneer BDP-LX52 blueray players?

Which player between the Sony BDP-S760 .v. Pioneer BDP-LX52 (or something else up to £550) would people recommend mainly for blueray and DVD picture and sound playback quality? I have the Pioneer SC-LX81 AV amp (with PQLS I believe) and a Samsung LE40F71B lcd TV – all using HDMI connects.

Incidentally, I’m glad to see What HiFi recognizing the quality of Monitor Audio speakers at last. I auditioned the Tannoy Revolutions twice at separate (good) HiFi specialaists and both times they were awful. Also auditioned several other makes. The Monitor Audio Silver are far better than the Tannoys in my view. I finally went for Monitor Audio Gold front & centre and RS1 Silver backs. (Did n’t like the sound of the duplex backs.)

In your set-up i'd go for the Pioneer - you'll benefit from greater synergy/ease of use between the player and receiver, plus the Pioneer does pip the Sony for all-round performance (as it should do at its relatively premium price). A superb player.

Erm, we've been giving them five-star ratings and Awards for years!

Thanks Clare. Had tried emailing you direct at WHF. You'll find same Qn in the WHF inbox - so can now ignore that.

Any more info on the relative merits of the Pioneer over the Sony? Is it really worth the price diff (£100 ish)?

I've seen comments on forum that Sony S760 may not work well with Pioneer lcd via HDMI. Any comments on that? (Mine will go via the Pioneer SC-LX81 anyway.)

Cheers, Ian

Hello,

I wonder if the Pioneer BDP-LX52 can play Sony's AVCHD HD format (I have a Sony HD camera)?

I have seen that the Pioneer does not play DVD+R/+RW format, I am guessing that any DVDs of this type are ineligible for this unit???

Thanks in advance.

Finally, was torn between the Pioneer BDP-LX52 and the Sony BDP-S765 (Singapore version w/o wifi). Will go for the Pioneer then (about extra £42 over the Sony).

Thanks Clare.

Hi Peterkins

The Pioneer BDP-LX52 does play AVCHD disc's but only recorded on the DVD-R, DVD-R DL or DVD-RW format.

The same applies if you want to play dvd's, it does everything but cannot play the +R or +RW format.

Yes Thanks my firmware is up to date according to the automatic update, Maybe there will be a new one along soon

I deleted a load of dta from the usb stick from earlier disks played and thought maybe that stick gets full

I get the message that says if you have a problem and then the screen goes black unfortunately too quickly to read the comment
