whats the best way to set up a subwoofer

i recently bought a rel stampede to go with my monitor audio gs10 speakers. i have set up the sub as told in the manual but am unsure as to what crossover frequency and volume i should set the sub at. my standmounts roll off at 40hz but is this an aquerate measurement in an imperfect room, so therefore should i set the frequency of my sub a little over this to allow for this? what volume should the sub be working at? is this based on room size or simply preference. thanks alot for looking guys and if any one could give me some help i would be very grateful.
