A TV that can handle a 1080p feed is different to a TV with a 1920*1080 display resolution.

I don't have Sky HD, but from what I have read, it outputs in both 720p for sports and 1080i for the wildlife stuff. No Sky HD feed outputs at 1080p. PS3's can output at 1080p though.

I know this is one massive oversimplification, but a TV is made up essentialy of 2 components:

1.) a bit that takes a source feed and translates (the processor) this into pixels for display on the TV''s screen

2.) the matrix of pixels that is the display (with a specific resolution - 720*1024, 768*1024, 1280*768, 1920*1080 etc, etc)

A TV is able to accept a feed into the processor, whether it be 480i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p etc.. and translate this into whatever resolution display it has attached to it. Because TV's are viewed from a distance, it is more important that a TV has a good "engine", translating whatever source feed into its native resolution.

Obviosly if you have a 1080p feed and a 1920*1080 resolution, the processor doesn't have to do much, so the image looks great. Feed the same display with something awful like standard definition TV, and the processing engine will need show its class.

In fact, standard definition feed translated for a 1024*768 disply will look better than a 1920*1080 display assuming the same processing engine is used as the processing engine is doing less work (it has to create a moving image using less total pixels).

Hope this helps and hasn't confused matters.

so the non 1080 will be better with standard def tv but the 1080 will take over when fed with 1080.does this make much difference say when playing ps3 on a non 1080 compared to a 1080p?mydilema is whether to go for 1080p lcd over the much rated panasonic plasma think its the px70,bear in mind sky hd and ps3,cheers.ps il be buying whathifi tomorrow so the review might help

Hi there, in 99% of cases, SD content will look better on a lower resolution display (if you view a lot of SD content make this part of your decision factors). The only exception I know to this is the newly released LX range of 50" HD plasmas (1920*1200). These have an amazing processing engine that makes SD material look more than acceptable on this high resolution screen. They are not cheep though, and start at 50 inches in size.

If you need something smaller, pick the best Plasma and best LCD for your budget and audition them both. Take your xbox with you to a specialist, if they don't have one, and try it out.

I am not a gamer, so I cannot comment on either xbox360 or PS3. the review should probably help though. If not, there is another forum on the web where you will get an answer to the smallest detail - avforums. Not as consumer friendly, or pretty as this site, but if its a "nuts and bolts" answer you are after....

At the end of the day, there is a 3rd stage to all this, which is how your eye interprets the image presented to it, and whether you prefer natural or enhanced images. Everyone is different, which its why it is important for you to make the decision. These sites can only go so far, and help you shortlist.

I have my shortlist, but I am just praying that the screen is not to big for the lounge, otherwise, its back to the drawing board!

This whole TV-choosing lark isn't easy - I like to watch DVDs and will likely sort out SkyHD and possibly an X360, but my better half watches corrie/emmerdale and all that. Judging by the explanations here, they are at opposite ends of the scale in terms of the requirements of any prospective purchase... buying the new issue this evening, hopefully that will help.

I watch loads of dvds and er'indors watches all that Corrie larck also and I went for the Samsung PS50Q97HDX which handles SD material very well via both the Freeview tuner and Sky(have just upgraded to a HD box and to be honest it is slightly better than the old Sky+ box on normal Sd channels but I put this down to the fact it is now hooked up via HDMI rather than RGB Scart). It also shines with my 360 in hd and this is a non 1080p panel.
