I Am A Wallet - McCarthy

Blonde on Blonde - US mono

(Jim, this is my third original. UK stereo and mono, US mono. Is it just the French mono mix I NEED now or are there others I should know about?)

Edit: just remembered my real-world Dylan friend swears by the Canadian mono mix in its earliest incarnations. Have you heard that one?

Oh, and another thing, do you have a favourite side of the album? Ridiculous and pointless question in one sense but utterly essential in another. Mine is currently, side 3.

It would always be 2 but I can't stand Just Like A Woman. Then again, side 1 has the Like A Rolling Stone-rivalling protean poetry of Johanna on it. Oh, for Martin Amis' sake (choose your own deity here. Although that particular one has questioned my faith with his recent digs at Jeremy Corbyn's atavistic leanings), it's all, bar JLAW, beyond compare.

Charlie, i'd like to help you but it's just too complicated; I just think the mono 'Blonde On Blonde' variations and tracking them down is probably nigh on impossible, not to mention prohibitively expensive...hey, look,,,,hib...like Hibbing! Hibbing Bob. The early Canadian mono mixes are the holy grail I think. I've just got UK stereo and mono versions. 'Highway 61' is a strange one: I'm convinced my two stereo copies sound very different...I must try and nail the reasons why. 'It takes A lot To Laugh' etc is probably my favourite BD song ever ever ever.

This is brilliant:

http://www.rdf.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Blonde.htm

and will help. I was always a big fan of Side 3 too. 'Visions Of Johanna' is probably the ultimate, 'How the heck did he come up with that?' song; really affecting poetry in my view. I love 'Stuck Inside Of Mobile With etc' too.

Can't abide Martin Amiss, but I love his dad's novel, 'Lucky Jim'

edit: I've got a live Van Morrison bootleg from about 1974 and he does an incredible job with 'Just Like A Woman'. His voice is just wonderful and he transforms the song into a really dramatic tour de force. Its NOT very pc, I'm afraid; in fact, quite the reverse but it's far better than the Minnesota Marvel's original. I'll see if I can find a link somewhere. Got it:

Hi Jim,

That article you provide the link for has been my recent reading and prompted a long dormant desire to collect the swathe of monos out there. Great detailed delineation of the whole thing.

Martin Amis? Well, we don't disagree much do we but I'm a huge fan for a number of reasons, most of which I'll save for another occasion, bar the fact I was enthralled by two of his novels in particular, Money and House Of Meetings and two of his startling non-fictions, Experience, which evinces a warmth and humanity hitherto difficult to discern in his fiction, perhaps. And beyond all others, his Chris Hitchens-provoked Koba The Dread. One of those books all recidivist lefties should read. I did, and my world view was forever re-shaped.

I also love Lucky Jim too. It's up there with David Lodge's highly entertaining campus novels. I'd put it alongside The British Museum Is Falling Down. It really does do that litmus test of all fiction: it takes you there and leaves you feeling you've lived alongside those characters and inside their heads.

I digress, sorry.

I'll track down Van's version of that awful song, he can transform most base metal material into something golden. I love his It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. The original is quite something though, too.

Koba The Dread sounds very interesting: I've just read a Guardian review as I didn't know anything about it. I had no idea my go-to deity, Hitch, was a friend of Martin Amiss. I've only read 'London Fields' which I thought was miserable beyond belief and offered no light, but, there again, I guess that's not an unreasonable world-view. Hitchins baffled and disappointed me re the war v Iraq, but I do understand his reasoning; unfortunately, I think it created the vacuum into which was sucked that which he feared the most. I genuinely wish he was here today to provide some enlightenment.

I think 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' was originally covered by Them on 'Them Again.' I really must fetch that down too; it's ages since I last played it.

David Lodge is brilliant!!! Always.

You digress; I digress. We digress together.

Yes, Hitch was perplexing when it came to the ousting of Saddam and Iraq. I was and still am conflicted about the conflict, shall we say.

He and Martin Amis went way back to their shared days at The Spectator in the early 70s, a period beautifully & perceptively chronicled in Amis' work. Probably in Experience but he also refers to it throughout much of his non-fiction work.

The recent excoriating blast at Jeremy Corbyn is rooted in Amis' reflections on the dichotomy between socialist and revolutionary socialist ideologies in his and Hitch's circle. It's funnier than it might sound.

Yes, when Van was in Them is what I meant. I've only got one compilation and it's on that.

Mr.Lodge, Mr.Green, Mr Burgess - we could digress awhile yet.

I have tomorrow off work *biggrin*

It's a vinyl night, washed down with Leffe Brune.

Art Blakey - A Night At Birdland Vol 1 & 2

Public Service Broadcasting - The Race For Space

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless*

*I hadn't realised until tonight how sought after the first pressing is. My copy is NM - just needs a good wet clean and an anti-static sleeve. Another one to go on the "get the right price for this when I pop my clogs" list. **

** edit: plus, I had forgotten what a wonderful album it is!

Wow, a great find. Some mighty fine composers there.

Yes a very enjoyable day of listening. I'm on to Bob Marley and the Wailers now - African Herbsman on Trojan.

I love the production on this album.

This is the joy of vinyl. There a billions of used records out there selling for peanuts. You can enjoy lots of new (to you) music on a shoestring. The Bob Marley I picked up at a garage sale for £1. It looks and sounds like it hasn't ever been played before.

Now playing:

Dave Lee - Jazz Improvisations Of Our Man Crichton

Jim W / Charlie

Not sure if this was discussed at all when I picked it up with several other Jazz rarities, but I think it's worth checking out. Track one is amazing!

Working my way through this today. 10 disc set, £2 car boot find in excellent condition

That is indeed a bargain, but can I suggest going to your local auction house. I picked up around 150 classical albums, and 6 or 7 good box sets, including some valuable ones, for £4.40 all in. There'll be a post about somewhere on the 'What vinyl have you bought' thread about a year or so ago. *biggrin*

What are you thinking of the Laurie Anderson Bernie?

It's definitely not easy listening, and I'll be honest, I don't think you'd like it. I do, but I do have pretty unusual taste. *smile*

I only played it because a client of mine was playing O Superman today, and it made me want to listen to it.

I of course remember 'O Superman', like it a lot. I seem to recall a tv program about her, around the same time as that release. From memory, a bit weird? I also seem to recall that there was some connection between that album and the film 'Alien', maybe the artwork?

I'm not sure about the 'Alien' link, but I'm sure they'd be information on the internet somewhere about it if it's true.

I'd say that 'O Superman' is probably the most commercial track on the album. Why not check Spotify etc, for the whole album, and give it a go?

not the right place I know, but just thought you might like Peter Hammill - 'Incoherence'. It's not on regular Spotify, but might be available on premium or elsewhere? Give it a go

Thanks. I'm playing it now. I'll let you know what I think.

It is with a very heavy heart and a terrible sense of betrayal that I have to confess, dear readers, that I'm listening to Bob Dylan's, 'The Cutting Edge' on cd. £440 on two crowns at the dentist during the past three weeks has left me without a red cent and the cds were just about affordable. I'll tell you what I think when I've finished playing it, if you're interested of course.

Yes, we're still reaping all the benefits of Thatcher's time in power.

My wife's going back to Japan in January for a while, and she's going to get her teeth sorted there. Two reasons, it'll be cheaper, and it'll be a better job. She's had comments from dentist over here about the quality of previous work she'd had done, so it's a no brainer to get them sorted when she goes back.

Yes, well, I blame Thatcher for everything so I agree with you, BBB. To be fair, my dentist, a Ugandan woman, is absolutely brilliant; she has saved a tooth that had no right to be saved and spent a good few hours doing so. I've had her for 8 years now and I keep pleading with her not to return home to Uganda. Even she thinks the prices are ridiculous in this country and acknowledges that this is why a good many people just don't go when they get dental problems.

Dentistry...the new vinyl.
