As it’s stargazing week (except the weather’s gone down the pan) I should really have played
Astronomy by Blue Oyster Cult
Orion, Jethro Tull
Cygnus X-1, Rush and they are the only ones I can think of tonight with a genuine astronomy theme. I can think of loads like Capricorn by Barclay James Harvest but these are not about astronomy

Anyway gave up and played

I'm unearthing a few lost gems in the midst of an upcoming music room relocation. Tonight's batch begins with:

1) Victorialand - The Cocteau Twins

I was never a huge devotee at the time, but shared a student flat with two people who were, so it's strange hearing these tunes/"soundscapes" all these years later. Like a hybrid of The Sundays and my current deity, Vini Reilly. Speaking of whom. . .

2) Circuses and Bread - The Durutti Column

From the same year as the above, I think, and equally life-enhancing.

I purchased a copy of Deep Purple 'Macine Head' for £10 and what a fantastic LP!!! Love it. Amongst the purchase was a Yes album for £4...not soo good as its sounds lean in all areas (could this be down to the quality of the vinyl and recording-vinyl is quite thin compared to the Deep Purple copy?)

I've had a bit of a Rory Gallagher-fest over the last few days (wonderful BTW). So this morning I've gone for a complete change of style, pace, and format.

After a particularly long and fine windswept walk with my dog this morning, those familiar with this sleeve will appreciate what suggested this LP to play..

Congratulations , DIB , you get to post the 2000th post on this thread . For your prize you're allowed to play any record in your collection whenever you want !

I played a bit of "LC" by the Durutti Column earlier , spurred on by Charlie playing some of his DC recently . No time at present to play more so I will play it in full ,along with "Without Mercy" , after dark .

In revers . . . ? Hazel and me had our Horlicks hour as usual last night, it was a one album choice, late and work this morning, I also tend to chose gentle music at that time of night?????what to choose . . . I came up with Jennifer Warnes 'The hunter'. I bought it in 1992, when I was in Miami, USA, at a big hifi show. Played it once, not so impressed, preferred 'Famous Blue Raincoat'.

Twenty years have gone by, what was I thinking, it is the most superb album, and amazingly engineered . . . and thats as a CD . . . yes I know, this is 'what vinyl . . . '. I have this morning, ordered the only vinyl copy available on Amazon, everyone is out of stock, asking for pre order at £36! and they will send a copy when they get one in!

Ironically, my vinyl copy is coming from the USA . . . be interesting to see how long it takes and how good 'as new' condition is for £16?

Hi SL,

Your mention of Durutti Column's LC made me seek it out, on CD alas. Another great album in their canon. Although I'm glad he eventually relinquished vocal duties on future releases.

I've got an amusing out-take of Vini Reilly singing the vocal part to Morrissey's Everyday Is Like Sunday. Vini played guitar on Moz's Viva Hate LP, of course. Should have been the B-side, it's hilarious.

I must admit I do prefer " Without Mercy" . Because there are no vocals !

I shall add DC to my list of artists I need to explore more . Which is becoming a flippin' long list ,

I played this one last night. I only bought it last year from a carboot sale, but its an original copy in good nick. I've played it before but only gave it a proper listen last night. What struck me besides what wonderful songs they are, was what a fabulously produced album it is. I wish all my LP's sounded so "alive" as this..
