Hi Jim,
I love the first, second and fourth on your list, don't know the others. You were certainly of a certain mood for that session.
Thursday pre-night out records:
Blood On The Tracks (!)
Electronic - Electronic
The best electro-pop album ever made, right?
Girls In Peacetime - Belle & Sebastian
Hi Charlie...I'd been listening to Duke Ellington and fancied some Mingus; I guess I'm getting into composition and arrangements. Records like Gil Evans: 'Out Of The Cool' for example. Dunno why...it just happened!
'Black Saint etc' is supposed to be his masterpiece (yawn) but I prefer 'Mingus Ah Um' ; 'Black Saint' is damn difficult to find on record though; it features quite a bit of erm musical/sexual imagery! 'Anthology' or 'Passions Of A man' is just a pretty thorough Atlantic period greatest hits or best tunes!
The Booker Ervin records are recommended listens; I always buy his stuff if I ever come across it. he was Mingus' tenor player for a good while. Passionate and intense stuff. 'The Freedom Book' is highly recommended.
No use asking me about electronica...it's one of many blind spots. Must play 'Blood On The Tracks' soon; haven't heard it in ages. Great choice.
