King Of Limbs - Radiohead

Unplugged - Bob

Unplugged - Neil

Great selection as always, Charlie. I still can't face 'Blackstar', still totally gutted, but everything I've heard from it sounds wonderful, especially the new version of 'Sue'.

In between watching the snooker. Ronnie is a poet of the green baize innit.

David Bowie: 'Blackstar'.

Yes, it's uncomfortable listening for a few reasons; it's also brilliantly engaging and fascinating. His best since 'Low'for me.

I'm trying to get a copy of this. What I've heard sounds pretty darned good. Out of interest, what's the pressing (not mastering) like? I've had so many very noisy pressings recently, and I'm fed up with having to take/send things back. And this one looks as though it's going to be expensive!

Hi TSP,

The pressing is okay but not flawless, and I'd add the same for the mastering too.

The music, as you know, is excellent and has rewarded many listens.

Yes, I can wholly understand not being able to face Blackstar.

As you know my opinion of it oscillated, all before the terrible news of his death was announced. Now, and in the context of that, and many listens I've become quite engrossed in it. Jim's phrases are most apposite, as noted earlier.

I braved Hunky Dory and Low yesterday on a crisp, cold drive to see my Dad, and the loss and wonder of it all came in waves in equal measure.

Have this on order ready to collect, looking forward to it.

If you mean by 'trying to get hold of it' it is out of stock, it seems to be back in. Recent weekly newsletter email from Resident in Brighton said back in stock

Thanks, Charlie. That's really useful. Now, do I spend an expected £30 on the vinyl or about half that on a flawless CD? Toughie...

Well, in my current financially straitened times, I'd go for the CD, but as you say its not an easy choice.

Did you catch his live Barbican show on R3 last night? Fantastic and for me it actually rendered the studio LP a little stale in comparison. Which is slightly over egging it as the LP is vibrant and full of sparky energy.

Hope we get a live recording sometime.

Oh, thanks Jimbo. Have already ordered from my local shop, so hopefully he won't have any trouble. Got a couple in on release but I didn't know about the album early enough. Also price looks lower than I was expecting for a triple. Thanks again.

This afternoon:

Patty Griffin – Servant of Love. Still surprised by really liking this album. Not usually my thing.
Hands – The Soul Is Quick
King Midas Sound – Without You
Cooly G – Playin' Me
Sexwitch – Sexwitch
Anna Calvi – Anna Calvi

It continues to baffle me and I'm beginning to think that's the way he wanted it. More Becket than Brecht maybe since some of it seems to concern futility and an inability to communicate...all humanity not just DB. I'm not sure though. Perhaps I'm trying too hard. Musically brilliant; lyrically often abstruse.

I had my first listen this morning, though only on download, and only the first 5 tracks. Some of it will have to grown on me, some of it already has.

You've done the hard work...the last three tracks are more trad pop music and easy to listen too...not that the rest is difficult, but more challenging perhaps.

It's the challenging stuff I like most. Favourites are definitely 'Blackstar' and 'Sue'.

Yes, Eric132, I like Lana Del Rey and this is a beautiful pop song. She was brilliant at Glastonbury too. Contrary to the rubbish written about her, she's the real deal...a genuine artist.

I appreciate the reply to my post.

She is very talented. Mr favorite songs from Lana del rey include: million dollar man, summertime sadness, blue jeans and dark paradise. All really good songs. Her album "Born to Die" is a great LP to have.

Revolver - side 2 in mono and then stereo

(Fixating on the "well, well, well you're feeling fine" meets organ epiphany refrain for some reason. Sometimes these things just hit you at different angles).

Turangalia Symphony - Messiaen/Previn

Someone Else's Party - The Durutti Column

Out Of Nowhere - Jimi Tenor

All of this music is interlinked, connections abound and transcend the constrictions of genre and classification.

Forgive my Pseud's Corner pallid prose - it's a grim, dank Tuesday outside but a festival of formulation inside, with tea on tap. This is what we're fighting for.

Hi Charlie...interesting list and observations. Grim here too, but, like you, there's always music and endless streams of tea... and biscuits of course. This is what I've settled for! I've given up fighting. My daughter loves 'Revolver' but doesn't like 'Doctor Robert' for some reason; shame, because I think it's a great 60's-defining track, he said, adopting a very pseudy voice and nodding sagely. ' I mean you know man, like a song that deals with depression and the new-fangled pills and the National Health and friendly doctors and all wrapped up in like that, ya know, like sunshine-filled Beatles optimism. So very 60's.' Well, something like that. Haven't played 'Revolver' for ages: I really must.

..I got the music of Africa right here:

Osibisa: 'Osibisa'.

Osibisa:'Woyaya'.

Great tunes, top-notch jazzy grooves and good for the soul. Nicely recorded too. What more d'y'all want?

Hi Jim,

Yes, spot on comments about Dr Robert, you old sociologist and cultural commentator, you!! It also partly defined my morning as well. So zeitgeist-y!

Liking your Afro-centric tip.

My travelling into town and back soundtrack was of a different but equally magnificent African hue:

Soutak - Aziza Brahim

My two little lads are in bed now, so it's time to crack open the booze - it is Tuesday night after all - and listen to this:

Der Rosenkavalier - R.Strauss/Vienna SO/Haitink (in magnificent mono too)

It's not the iconoclastic Elektra or Salome but it's Richard at his most florid and engaging. And it's my Dad's absolute favourite opera, so it's got other associations for me too.

Ike Quebec: 'Blue And Sentimental'. A bit battered, but then so am I. Great lp to listen to at this time of night with a drink or ten. *smile*
