Blackstar - Bowie

My copies are on the way. Still no news about the damaged lithographs though. *nea*

Call me a shameless musical critic mountebank but the Bowie album is doing strange things to my mental well being. And I like it that way.

I reckon Bowie should have called it a day after 'The Laughing Gnome': it's hard to top genius.

Funny, Charlie! No, I'm afraid I'm not. I could ramble on for pages about the shock of seeing my cult hero of 'Space Oddity' and 'The Man Who Sold The World' morphing into the massively popular and critically lauded Ziggy Stardust but you'd have to have been there. I still think 'John, I'm only dancing' is great though! I guess I moved on to the exotica that was Neil Young, Spirit, the Airplane, Dead and fell in love with the whole West Coast vibe; meanwhile David Bowie became a big star and a popular music icon. I guess he wasn't 'underground' enough for the rebellious 18 year old that I had become. That whole 'glam' thing left me cold, I'm afraid. I never recovered really although I liked 'Low' and 'Heroes' and have copies somewhere...never play them though. I willl listen to the new one though as you likened it to Scott Walker and that spiked my interest. Bet it's Scott-lite! I prefer the real thing in all its bleak and terrifying loveliness. So now you know the truth about me, as one of our heroes once sang; I feel like I've just confessed to a crime of horrific proportions! Forgive me.

Hi Jim,

I think that's it really. In relation to Bowie, I've never been a devotee either. I think we've established I'm a slender decade younger than you so my reasons are different but amount to much the same Dave response.

That said, I've got a fair slice of his discography on CD and vinyl. Plus, my twenty year old daughter is a fairly big fan.

The new album is Scott-lite, in one sense (as relayed in a previous post) but I can sense and now start to enjoy other aspects to it (as also mentioned in further volte-face posts).

Tuning in to:

Perpetual Motion People - Ezra Furman

Honeybear - FJM

Carrie & Lowell - Sufjan Stevens

Phew!!! Glad I didn't offend you, Charlie. I'm going to give it a listen tomorrow; I'll let you know what think, not that I'm a Bowie expert or anything as has been established; it'll just be the view of an interested bystander. Looking forward to it.
