What price detail?

Detail.

The character should be there in the recording and I don't want my stereo messing with that.

Both.

I prefer not to hear detail dominating the sound (like a badly over-sharpened photo) but to just be there minding it's business and supporting the illusion.

"We've never had it so good", exclaimed one of our esteemed members about 2 years ago. I personally don't fully subscribe to that notion. Some modern amps I heard have fallen below the sonic plimsoll line.

Are we trying to extract too much for very little?

Couldn't put it better myself Chebby.

+1 (or is that 2?)

They aren't mutually exclusive - well designed gear will deliver both.

Detail for me, although I'm not sure what you mean by character.

As for price, detail cost me less the £1k for the complete system in my sig.

Personally I like a lot of detail with my music, which is probably why I now do most of my listening via headphones

Quite right. The title seems to be invting the comment that one would sell ones soul (or at least the music's soul) for detail.

You want the character, ambience and detail of the original performance. Without them HiFi isn't HiFi.

You have hit the nail firmly and squarely on the head

This is what I have always wanted and now have !

And sadly, you'll never get it. You might get a close representation but that's it. Nice post right enough though. 🙂

Yep I give that the thumbs up . . . plus 'carefully matched gear' is important and it don't have to cost the earth either.
