Hi! I just got a pair of Mission speakers 750 20th anniversary LE and don’t know what amp to get.

Since I’m really new in this topic would appreciate some insights.

I love vinyl and the most important to me is keeping the sound quality. That said, I do have an initial budget of 300€ max (which I know unfortunately it’s not much).

I listen to a lot of blues, jazz and 70’s rock.

Any advice ?

Welcome!

An older Marantz amplifier might suit, as many have decent enough phono inputs (for your turntable) are widely available secondhand, and repairable too. Or you might get a more recent PM600x series model for your budget.

Do you have any dealers nearby, or well-known traders - perhaps on eBay? - where you live?

Lastly, do you know the speakers actually work?

I checked and saw an old Marantz Pm7000 for 290€. What’s your thoughts?

I live in Spain so currently checking Wallapop and eBay.

About the speakers, they’ll be shipped on Monday and planning on testing them at a friend’s house with a Yamaha R-S202D

People buy secondhand to make the most of their budgets.
I like new myself and if that's the case for you, then maybe hold off until you're able to consider the likes of a Rotel A8 or Marantz PM-6007.

PS: just seen the above reply (which always happens to me as I'm an ultra slow one-finger tyoer 🙄)
Thank u. Don’t mind second hand if the quality is good 🙂

That looks like a pretty high price, based on UK sales, but if it’s in very good cosmetic condition and fully working then it may be a good bet. It may be 25 years old, so it’s hard to say if it might need attention at some point. From a dealer with, say, three months warranty it would be fair enough. Please appreciate I have no understanding of the Spanish market for hifi!

I asked about testing because if the speakers were faulty, you might damage a new amplifier - a double disaster!

How much are used PM6004, 5, 6, 7 models?

Rotel. I know WHF would usually take an alternative view when it came to reviews and awards, but ever since the 80s/90s, very few budget amps could really make demanding budget loudspeakers sound anything like they should sound. Everyone was buying B&W 600 series speakers in the 90s, and only the Rotel amps could make them sound half decent.

There are things in your phrase that contradict each other. Vinyl setup is not applicable to the concept of "high-quality sound", it is a matter of taste. If you want quality, use a modern (digital) source.

I listen to a lot of blues, jazz and 70’s rock.

The right setup is universal and has no genre dependence.

Small bookshelf speakers won't give you the full range of music. Either add a subwoofer (2.1) or take larger speakers.

A classic stereo amplifier doesn't make much sense in a modern setup, as it doesn't have a built-in sound processor, which is necessary to properly adjust your speakers to your room. Therefore, it is better to take an AV receiver, for example, Onkyo RZ30. This is more than enough for a typical medium-sized room.

I will always recommend the same amplifier for that sort of money, Audiolabs 6000A. In my case it saw out Hegels H95 and Cyrus ONE Cast. Superb, even compared to much more expensive stuff. If you want colouration look elsewhere. For an amplifier that will let your source and speakers do the talking, this is it. ‘Better’ costs a lot more.

The biggest problem this amplifier has that it usually used with lower level speakers. It can do so much better and scales superbly. Drove Stirling LS3/6 BBC Ltd Editions and others without sweat.

You'll want an amp with a good phono stage. I've raved here before about the phono on Roksan's K2 and K3 but they'll be outside your budget at EU500 + second hand. You should consider Onkyo's 9010 which I haven't heard but which got good reviews for this aspect, or Rega do a range starting with the Brio. Looking at wallapop es, seems like you could get either the 9010 or Brio on your budget. Check out reviews on those two and see if you like what you read.

I agree with the suggestion of the Rega Brio which is very good indeed.

Has an excellent phono stage and headphone output, I often regretted "upgrading" from mine.

The Rega Brio Mk6 is a fine amplifier indeed ! and is worthy of being kept to see you through upgrades of your other equipment.
I auditioned one at several dealers, with several speakers including Dali, and Proac DT8 , brilliant detail and full sound all round, heavy and very well built quality..

I think you´ll be pleased with the Yamaha.
And I think you could/should consider other Yamaha options, they´re very good. The AS series is splendid, specially the AS-501, 701 & 801

Or the Rotel route, as someone else advised. I´ve owned the RA-1070 and liked it very much. The RA-1072 is, many people say, even better. I cannot confirm as I have no experience.
The first 15 series are very solid too, amps like the RA-1520 or the RA-1570 are excellent.

Solid options both of them, both technically and plenty on the 2nd hand market or even new (Yamaha).

Cambridge Audio sell their wares on eBay, open boxes at reasonable prices, worth investigating if you're on a tight budget.

Also consider second hand, you can grab an Audiolab for an absolute bargain.

I'm not sure if you were looking for a turntable also? You can get Project Primary E for a very good price, they come in black or white but yellow is mellow! 🙂

You don't need to spend a lot to get a good sound, the addition of a turntable will exceed your budget but I think, it's worth it, if you can stretch it.
