What do I have, and how can I rejuvenate it?

Cryptic, or what?

I have a Linn turntable - not a Sondek or the iterations thereof, but something more basic (and I think it might even be called a Basik).

It's about 16-18 years old (getting the vote soon), came with an arm installed as standard (no idea what name - but it had one..).

My children have been un-loved for 12-13 years, and I'm interested in re-bonding with them.

The system has been parked, in good dry light free conditions for 13 years......

My questions - what are the names of my children (deck and arm), what impact will "storage" have had on wiring, and what cartridge - (good, but less than 100 GBP), to use as a way to re-bond with vinyl, and where can I get it and an alignment protractor?

Many thanks for insights....

If in storage it was dry and dust free it should be ok, the only points to consider are a new belt and to lube the spindle bearing. The Basik was Linns entry level TT and a very good one at that, it either came with the basik arm or akito which if the latter is the better arm, an AT 95E will be a little belter on that arm whatever it comes with and will be a nice little player. Musonic on the web is good for the belt and cartridge and possibly the protractor or you could pop along to the vinyl engine, they have a dedicted Linn page to help with all matters Linn.

It's either going to be an Axis or a Basik. If an Axis, it may have either the BasikPlus or Akito Mk1 arm. If the Basik, then only the Akito arm (unless someone has swapped it along the way).

AT-95E would be a good starter, but I would probably venture a little further up the ladder - think something like either the Ortofon 2M Red (if you like a forward, fast sound) or an Audio-Technica AT-120E (smoother, but similarly detailed presentation).

Both retail at around £70. The wiring will be fine - my Ittok is getting on for 30yrs old now and is perfect. As has been said, Vinylengine is the best place for protractors...

Many thanks guys. I'll have a look at what I've got based on your feedback - ditched the boxes long ago, but I should be able to find some identifying info on there..... Then I'll hit the sites and rejuvenate my listening repertoire - amazing how many records never made the transition to CD. A veritable treasure trove waiting to be rediscovered....
