I disagree. The amp if we use the rough estimate of av receiver at £1k is the equivalent to a £300 stereo amp for music, he has a decent £600 level stereo amp. The speakers are very nice and a budget bd player can easily be upped by a say, £300-500 cd player. If he is interested in using computer music and a DAC, he could get the Cambridge Audio 740 or 840c which have digital inputs. The 840c would batter the bd player ( as would the 740). If a DAC is not needed, the Rega Apollo is very well liked and you can get very good deals on the Arcam CD192.
That was my opinion, short stuff! Cambridge audio is rubbish. Rega apollo YES! Arcam is boring.
you obviously haven't heard the 840c then. It's a better cd player than the Rega, without doubt.
CA 840C @£750.00 (4 stars), Rega Apollo @£475.00 (5 stars). CA is over-rated and rubbish.
No offense but that is absolute rubbish. Are you just going on the one review or have you heard it?
I have owned the Rega Apollo. CA kit I've owned are CD4, CD5, 540C, 640c V1 & 2 - they were all rubbish. I have heard the 840C - not impressed. My cousin owns it and he has replaced it with a Rega Saturn which according to him, is 'night and day' with the 840C - so it's rubbish too.
