Varying sound volume when playing DVD through new Denon 1940

I've recently bought a Denon 1940 DVD player but have noticed that when playing back some DVDs the sound volume seems to be going up and down. This happens with recent DVDs (i.e. modern films) as well as older films. I'm playing it through a Loewe CRT set - which, while soon to be replaced, is otherwise great and was fine with my previous Loewe DVD player.

I can't see anything in the instructions for the 1940 which might cause this. Has anyone come across this phenomenon before?

News to me. I'm used to the ads suddenly blaring out at me while watching films on TV, but we haven't experienced this problem with the Denon 1940. Anyone else?
