To replace my faulty Linn Axis, been looking over on e-bay at used turntables, Systemdek IIX was top of my list but very thin on the ground.....what about Thorens ttables what are the best vintage models to look out for, or Revolver, Dual seem to remember these being big hitters in the '80s....Just can't decide whether to go down this route or tweek my Planar 2 looking to spend around £200

Thorens TD160 Super (well I would say that wouldn't I?), a very well engineered, very under-rated deck IMO. mine beats my previous P3 and not a million miles away from an LP12. Unlike Regas they need to be well setup but the payback is worth it.

Thorens TD160 has been in my family for nearly 40 years and I wouldn't part with it:

I can't recommend them enough. And they're still plentiful enough to be cheap. I keep threatening to buy a better arm for it (like an SME3009) not that the original is worn or especially substandard, but after all these years I guess I never will lol.

The Thorens 160's and 150's are good and should be within budget. The 124 is very good, but likely to be way over budget.

There are quite a few alternatives: Technics 1200 / 1210's, Lenco GL75's (or other similar Lenco models), Pioneer PL71, various other high-end when new Japanese direct drives from the 1970's and '80's. Check out German eBay as well as UK eBay.
