Underwhelmed

I was just in Knightsbridge having a drink with a mate and then popped into Harrods (as you do).

Looked at cameras (which were expensive surprisingly), and then looked in the S&V room...

Oh my god, they had 10 bits of Cyrus playing through MA PL-300 speakers, a £10k system, with the option of upgrading to Chord cables for a mere £1,783.

To say that I was underwhelmed with the sound is possibly the biggest understatement ever. Absolute rubbish!

I heard those speakers with the Musical Fidelity KW kit, top notch Nordost cables and Isotek everything. I found it an absolute assault on the senses. The bass was like a pile driver and the treble as though the pile driver hit a gas main. Not where I'd spend £20k...

Are you sure you didn't take a wrong turn and were in the S&M room??

Sounds like your ears were tortured...

Andrew Everard:Y'see, we tested the PL100s for Gramophone and quite liked them...

A different affair to the 300. I'm sure they just take some getting used to, but forget the Cyrus stuff.

They do sell Arcs, and Meridian.ÿ

I don't think it's a great listening environment, but honestly hand-on-heart they sounded like a basic £1,000 system. Seriously rubbish. I left the room shaking my head, and I'd be surprised if they'd sold any his year.

If they don't. someone's going to get Fayed.

Noooo!

I'm not sure any hi-fi could really live up to the expectations most of us would have for £10k. The law of diminishing returns sets in way before that and I think a spare 10k (I'm dreaming now!!!) could be much better divided as about £3k on hi-fi and £7k on going to see loads of concerts, eating out at nice restaurants, and building a nice library of music.

Are you honestly saying that if you had £10k to spend, then you would split it? Ha ha ha [to fade]

Yup, if it was a truly spare 10k. There is a definite limit to what I would spend on hi-fi. No matter how good or expensive, no hi-fi will ever match up to going to live concerts and experiencing the music first hand.

I heard PL300's with an Esoteric CDP, I forget the specific model, and a Jolida JD1000 for amplification.

It was pretty gangbusters I've gotta say. Those speakers were juuuuuuuust right with the big Jolida toaster. It's a very warm tubey affair so I can see how Cyrus would just run up and stick an icepick in your ears with those speakers.

going live i went to a eagles concert at hampden and it was rank rotten bass boom bass boom ,nothing else even that was ill defined ,, i have now been to numerous outside concerts, and i dont like them very much, i much prefer inside concerts so if i had 10k to spend id have a ball buying or upgrading my hifi and really enjoy myself , hows 5k new turntable 3k amp 2k speakers, i am away to get some lottery tickets for weds draw it might be me .. i have a dream

Talking of outside, if I remember Harrods' AV room, you might as well listen to hifi outside rather than there - they had a monster Linn setup there once, with the 35k actives just out in the shop floor, and it certainly looked impressive with the big oval drivers pumping in and out to Take That (IIRC), but you wouldn't buy it. So it's setup more than anything........

That's the one!

And yes it is tacky. Spent ages looking for the Nile log flume and the Valley of the Kings rollercoaster

That tickled me...LOL

I have heard the MA on few occasions and they are not bad (certainly not rubbish as mentioned on this thread imo) they do need a good set electronics though.
