i have just noticed something interesting.. The white smokey spot on the set seems to disappear when my curtains are drawn back.. My set is sat on a stand in the bay area..So you can imagine a huge window..Now, when the curtains aren't drawn back and light obviously seeps in, the spot can be seen..but when curtains r drawn back, and only room light is on, u can NOT see the spot...What do you guys make of that..?

Got it. Your TV is perfectly fine. You need to place some tape over a specific area of the back of the set, as light is shining through and causing the spot on the screen. This is perfectly safe and will not void your warranty.

See this thread:

http://www.avforums.com/forums/plasma-tvs/1639440-panasonic-vt50-part-five-13.html (post #365).

If you're happy with the TV in every other regard, that should be problem solved.

Agree, you can even test it the other way, run the scroll effect and watch from the back of the tv, you will see the white parts from the back through the gaps also. I noticed this when combating my ir. this might give you a better idea which area to cover up

I had the same thing. It's light shining through the back of the the tv to the screen, and can be resolved by blocking the light source.

Mine was like a letter T strangely, and really annoyed me until I worked out what was happening.

I'm sure Strapped's link will help.

The area to cover is shown in photograph #3 in the post I linked to.

Has Civilian checked back in on this thread? I hope he's not arranging something more radical without realising there's a simple solution to his problem.

HA HA BB. woooooooooooooooooo, hooooooooooooo!!! Thank you soooooooooooooooooo much Strapped. It worked...I'm so happy i get to keep the set. More so as this was the only issue that I've come across thus far. Thanks to all for replying. Always appreciated, never forgotten. Hopefully i can now enjoy the set once the running in period is over with.

What do i say to the peep's at JL? I will be receiving a call from them next Friday...Do i just simply say i taped the back of the set up?

I'm not sure you need to say anything, unless you're concerned that applying tape to a small section of venting will void JL's warranty. (It shouldn't, but it might be worth asking to be sure.)

In any case, glad you're all sorted!

£1.699 from John Lewis, price matched with Direct TVs. (I'm still on the look out for a better price match before my 28 days is up.)

Attached to the stand, the 50VT65 measures 120 x 79cm.

Just to be clear on a point in my previous post, the VT50 can produce reference greyscale and colour accuracy, but only at the the expense of contrast performance (due to the luminance cap in Professional modes and limited calibration options in other presets). This point is only worth noting if you ever plan to get your TV professionally calibrated. If not, stick it THX mode and away you go...

As you've been so helpful Strapped, it's about time we returned the favour... 🙂

2 stores have the 50VT65 for £1679 - http://www.totaldigital.biz/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=4749&zenid=81ib4052ari2gj9khri3klaln2

And, a few others have it for £1689 - http://pricespy.co.uk/product.php?p=1672586

New GT50 due tomorrow (god I'm getting good at packing them back in the box)........and its costing just £699......bargain!

I called JL yesterday evening asking them when they would be stocking the GT60.. To my surprise he gave me a date...27/5/2013....I have called back since and have not gotten a repeat date.

If that is the case and it does come out that week...Is it worth me changing my VT50 FOR THE GT60? I don;t seem to have any serious issues with my VT50... Fuzzy image of the face for a second or two is the worse i have had...Thats during SD viewing. Have not really noticed any else besides that, maybe thats because its in run in mode and cant notice any banding ect ect due to settings being low. . So is it worth me considering a swap?

That's a tricky one.....

do you notice the fans on your VT50 at all?

Whats the price difference likely to be?

If fan noise is no problem..maybe its just a case of price difference.....I'm very happy now with my GT50 as I only use it for movies (with 5.1 volume loud) and its ended up at £699......

i know the GT60 is newer but it would need to be the same price as the VT50 for me to consider (if I were you)

On what basis would you be entitled to a swap?

Here's my view, for what it's worth.

The retailer has a responsibility to supply products that are fit for purpose. If a TV has a noticeable defect out of the box it doesn't fit this description. On that basis you should feel free to take whatever action affords the most satisfactory result.

With that last point in mind, you got a VT50 for a sensational price and it appears to be problem free. A problem free television is the Holy Grail and seems far from the norm in recent years. If you switch out again, you may get a TV with problems, in which case you'd be worse off than you are now.

I think you should hold on to your problem-free VT50 tightly and refuse to let anyone wrestle it from your hands. That situation works best for John Lewis, and is hopefully the most sensible course of action from your perspective, too.

My concern isn't JL well be losing Money, My concern is for myself. There a retailer who accept goods being given back. I have been given a 90 day cooling of period which i will take advantage off. . I was told by JL that they would NOT be stocking the GT60.. Yes, we were making ASSUMPTIONS on them stocking it...But i could go on assumptions. JL preferred i had given my GT50 back as quick as possible hence me exchanging for the VT50 and not waiting.

True, and agreed. I think i need to take a step back and just enjoy. I guess deep down I'm just concerned this set may end up having problems down the line... Even though it has none now. and thought the 2013 models well not.. The GT50 has scarred me!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol, As usual thanks for the Logical advice strapped.

All this talk about problems with Panasonic TVs is really putting me off. I might end up going for the F8500 instead... :?

Those scars don't fade easily. You'll watch every other TV focusing on the right hand side of the screen, just in case a problem appears.

GT50 owners should mobilise and seek compensation for psychological damage!

You'd be trading Panasonic problems for Samsung problems. The trick is working out which problems are easiest to live with; or which issues bother you least.

The best you can do is brush up on manufacturer specific problems, audition, and buy from an understanding retailer.

Panasonic = mild-to-major uniformity problems and 50 Hz motion issues, even on this year's sets, though these problems are not so glaringly obvious this year.

Samsung = brightness pops, less impressive black levels, and new this year a horizontal band near the top of the screen.

Ha-Ha, strapped! Your spot on though.. I watch my VT50 like like that... And in turn, i start imagining problems that aren't there..Lol. I wonder if i can ever enjoy my plasma or any other..!

P.s. I think the motion is way better on this set then the GT50.. Would i be wrong in stating that..? saying that, i see uniformity issue on this set and did not on my Gt50.. Only when watching EastEnders in particular.. lol.

How's you set starpped? Iv been so in to my own issues i forgot to ask..
