New thread so as the other 'buzz' is running two or three topics.....

new GT50 set up in 'normal' mode, there is a slight hum from the display which is fine....but when bright scenes show, the buzz is too loud. Ice Age a good example......

so, is there a way of reducing this, is this normal, and should I change it?

dont really fancy the merry go round of swaps but will if I could get one that does not do this.....it sounds a bit like an old CRT TV that's on it's last legs but only dusting bright scenes.....

can settings help?

Hi Nick,

I got Panasonic 50 ST 50 and it is doing the same bzzzz on bright scenes I swapped it and new one is the same.

I just save your time and money probably :). Anyway it is a great TV but I am glad I already ordered projector Epson 3200, beacuse I really mind frame on whatever big TV.

Happy New Year !

If that doesn't work, this worked for a friend of mine:

Good tips BB, my new GT arrives in a couple of days, and all this talk of buzzing is starting to worry me.

My tv will be a few feet from the wall behind, and I won't be using the internal speakers, so hopefully it will be ok.

I'm a bit worried about the loosening of a screw tip though, don't want to do anything that might affect the warranty.

I'm getting ahead of myself anyway, tv hasn't arrived yet.

Thanks BB....

not sure I want to adjust contrast to fix a buzz at the detriment of the picture.....although a quick at taper at holding a cashmere blanket behind seemed to do something.....I just need another pair of hands to check again and I'll post what I find....

where can I get settings from?

You could try running the set in using the Professional picture presets, which have a luminance cap and pixel oribiter option (it's sensible to switch the latter on, for a few weeks, anyway). The Professional presets are more accurate than the "Normal" mode and should buzz a little less, too.

Having owned two Panasonic plasma televisions (I'm about to take delivery of my third) I've found that issues with panel noise tend to lessen over time. Somewhere on here there's a thread about buzzing and high-pitched whining from my V20, which I was considering returning at the time. Within a couple of months, everything calmed down and the set is now virtually silent in operation.

I'd be less concerned about buzzing (unless it's so loud it's distracting at normal television volume levels). If things don't get better, you have the John Lewis guarantee.

How's your GT50 in terms of screen uniformity? If you've got no problems there, I'd say it's a keeper, unless any buzzing is distractingly loud. Bear in mind that all plasma TVs buzz a bit, but I'd never swap mine for an LED television. Enjoy those deep blacks, accurate colours, and improved motion!

Agreed. How are you finding the TV in general other than the buzzing? Give it a week if it is still driving you crazy and you really like it, get it changed. Get used to it first though.

Thanks for your replies.....very helpful to have people to ask....

so, a few hours in and at a normal volume (TV speakers) the buzz is annoying and constant during the football, up and down with tennis (louder with full court) and then load with any bright scene....

darker scenes its fine, and having always had LCD I can see dark seems are fantastic and also the motion with football on at the moment is better than my Sony (motion flow).....

cant see any problem with the picture although I think it will look better when I set it up properly and my bloody BLU ray player is saying 'ext memory not recognised' when there is none....so I can't check bluray!! May need to buy a new one as factory reset did nothing. Anyway, I digress....

so, it's just the buzzing....is there a fix for it or is trying one more set the only option?

it defiantly is too loud if I cat watch football....and I'm happy for a bit of noise....at least it's related to the picture and not any other part......have switched it off for a bit now.....

Hhhhhmmmmm..

Report the problem to your retailer.

That would be sensible, just so they're aware.

Did you try using the Professional preset? Is the buzzing less distracting if you do this? I still think it's worth giving it a week, as Gel suggests. That phone call to the retailer should put your mind at rest, in case things don't improve...

Obviously we can't hear your set to advise if the buzzing is normal or a problem. You'll have to determine if it's tolerable.

Hi nick,

A few months in how are you finding the buzzing from the set? Much like you i have just bought a 50gt50 and find the buzzing quite distracting. I have already had one replaced by JL on the hope it was a bad one but the second set is exactly the same. I wondered if yours had gotten any better over time?

Cheers

Michael

Hi Michael,

im on my 3rd set and the buzzing has been the same with all of them.....turns out that the first set was may have been the better....having come from only LCD's, I was very surprised anyone ever put up with this noise....I assume that those who don't hear it, have the tv in a bigger room, with a average louder volume, or acoustically different layout or something...or those with sets with fans can't hear it......I haven't had a set for longer than a month or so so not sure if the buzz will reduce but I wouldn't think so....

however, I'm lucky in as much as I only use the set for bluray movies with surround sound on a high volume so I only hear the buzz if I get a very quiet, bright scene, which is not very often.....and the plasma picture is so much better for movies than any LCD I have ever had so I can really understand what the fuss is about...the black levels and contrast make a huge difference to a film viewing....

My other tv's are LCD which I use for day to day stuff.....I couldn't use a plasma for everyday viewing, but that is just a combination of having a very quiet home and sensitive hearing....

currently having some motion trouble with 3rd GT50 but this maybe the swap in bluray player....will be messing about a bit with this tomorrow.....

not sure any of this helps you though!

does it help... yes!

is it what I wanted to hear... erm, no! It is however what I expected and suspect that all sets experience this problem, the thing that varies is peoples ability to notice (and tolerate) the sound. I have contacted Panasonic directly and requested an engineer visit to see if there is anything which can be done to at least reduce the noise. I am awaiting an email back at the minute!

Thanks for taking the time to reply and I will let you know if and when I get a reply. I suspect it is simply a fault I will have to live with (simply cant afford the ~£500 more for the GT60)!

i have exactly the same buzz, think its just the way with gt50s,however ido think its not as loud as it was, currently just over 2 weeks of running in and it does produce a stunning picture, ive also calibrated with a thx disc and dont have contrast or brightness as high as the factory settings,so it really takes a very bright white screen to even notice the buzz,in truth i can live with it happily.

Cyberkid:

do let me know what Panasonic say....would be nice to not have the buzz.....I thought about the GT60 too but am now sure that will buzz just the same....the sets with built in cooler fans must mask the buzz at least a bit, but then I would get annoyed by the fans which says more about me than the tv's!

I will definately keep you updated! Strangely I think I could live with fans as at least that is constant, its where it will suddenly start buzzing that I get reminded of the issue!

Nick - you had yours for quite a while, did you not notice yours settling down at all?

also, I contacted JL just to keep them updated with the situation and the I am not entirely happy with the set just in case I needed more assistance in the future. They have sent my email through to the faults department so will let you know if that turns into anything
