Hi

It has been a few years since I last posted on here, unfortunately think my old account has gone!

After buying a panasonic 50vt30 a few years ago, I have now found it's about an inch too wide for its home! So I am looking for a new tv.

Size wise 47-50 inch as all the new 50 inch tvs I have seen will fit. Budget is up to £1500 max. My movie collection is probably 50/50 DVD and blu ray, but I am that person who likes 3d and have a growing collection, so a really good 3d picture is important. I am now deciding between sky and Virgin but I am sure tv will be a mixture of sd and possibly mostly hd.

As everyone seems to be pushing 4k the main tvs I have seen are tw sony 8505 - which I've been told is poor 3d - the samsung 7500 and the panasonic 802 my current favourite.

Any recommendations on the above would be appreciated, as far as 4k I'm not fussed but if the best tv as far as what I need now is 4k it's a bonus.

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any advice!

For me, the choice would be between HU7500, H7000 and H6400 series' of Samsung TVs.

Hello Sjc81, I almost agree with bigboss, except that within the last two months I was in John Lewis, and I could see the 40 inch versions of the Samsung H7000 series and H6400 series side by side. I used the remote control to ensure that they were both on the same picture mode, I think it was Standard that I changed the picture mode to. I could see little difference between the pictures on the two sets, in fact I may have slightly preferred the picture on the H6400. I'm not clear about what extra facilities the H7000 has over the H6400, but certainly on picture quality alone there seemed to me nothing to justify the H7000 costing about £700 over the H6400 costing about £450.

If you want 4K, then I'm with bigboss, I like the Samsung H7500 series (flat), which is now cheaper than it was six months ago.

So of the Samsung TV's 6400 and the 7500. If all i watched was DVD, HD and 3D, would the 6400 be almost the equal of the 7500 or because of the (i presume) superior processing etc of the 7500, would that still be a better tv?

Thanks for all the advice!

Also i know this doesn't interest many people at all, but any stand out 3d TVs? I noticed the best for 3D on here was the old Sony W905, has nothing beaten that this year?

4K TVs will upscale pictures more than 1080p TVs, so SD pictures will look noticeably worse. 4K processing is so good that for 1080p pictures, there is little to differentiate.

If 3D is important for you, look for 4K TV with passive 3D glasses. You'll still get full HD resolution without the problems of active shutter glasses. Otherwise, 3D is excellent in the above TVs.

Thanks once again for the advice, the more i look at it i'm tempted to buy a 48H6400 which i think is around the £529 mark, to carry me through the next 2-3 years until fingers crossed there is something that really stands out!

Unless there are any stand out alternatives? This must be one of the first times i have struggled to spend my money when it comes to AV equipment!

The 46" and up h7000 uses the ultra clear panels, the 40" h7000 uses the standard panel from the 6 series so it would look the same.

i have the sony w905 tv and while the 3d for me is not the best (its my 3d vision) it's very good in general. my dad always comments on how far it comes out to him etc lol. even with my mediorce 3d vision it can still be very good in certain films (most noticeably transformers 4) brilliant picture quality too. discontinued now i got it for £800 but im sure if you waited or dug around you could find one with a bit of luck!

Hi Sji81,

I was also thinking about purchasing a new TV along the same lines as you, did you come to a decision in the end?

I'm tempted by the Samsung UE55HU7500 but will all the news from CES, I'm tempted to wait until Feb/Mar when the new TV's started coming in. Hopefully that will drive the 2014 models down!
