Anyway my question is thinking of upgrade where would be my first choice should i go for a new cd player or amp, its not that im not happy with the system but im hoping to upgrade each item one at a time. any sugestions

i love the Nad sound lets be honest they do have an in house sound lots of base and power im interested in the cambridge audio 840 cd player or maybe an arcam set up.

im no expert and the nad was my first proper hi-fi and now im hooked im happy with the ma. br5 speakers so im looking to spend about £800 on an amp and the same on a cd player.. i have no local dealer to demo them so any comments or tips please............thamks

Hi Rob,

I'm a fellow NAD lover. I had a C355 for quite awhile and also loved it. Let me advise you to proceed with caution. Improvement from the level you are now at with your electronics is NOT a simple matter. Move up from mass market rubbish to NAD was a no-brainer, but the next step is tricky and very subjective. You can easily spend more money and be less happy. The electronics in the £800 price range are mostly well built with quality parts, but they will all sound quite different. Some have a very lean, clinical sound. Others may have deep bass, but are missing the mid-bass emphasis you are used to with NAD.

I can recommend the amp I am now using, the QUAD 909. To my ears it has all the benefits of the NAD, but with a slightly cleaner mid-band and treble (very slight).

Good luck...

Snap! Listen to a Kandy K2 its not that disimilar from that NAD *BIG* sound and can really rock your room if that's what you want, but not at the expsnse of subtlety or delicacy. Not sure that a Cyrus CD6SE is an obvious upgrade from a 542, but it worked well for me.

hi thanks for your advise you sound like you know what you talking about, my biggest worry is that i spend £800 on a new amp and £800 on a new cd player and as im sure the nad set up is good for the money i may end up spending best part of £1,600 and not see a big difference or even worst may not like it., its not that im not happy with the nad its just im looking to go to the next level so to speak. I had a chance to listen to a friends cambridge audio system 640v2 and amp you know the set up, and it did sound great but im not sure if it was better or just different. i think the c.a cd player had more detail but at the same time how can i say it just was not as musical if that makes sense. do you know if there are any other brands that have a well sort of nad sound iv looked at the nad stuff and they seem to go to the c542 sort of level cd player £350 and then they go really hi end there is no sort of middle ground.. any way thanks for taking the time to help a new comer and advise welcome
