Thorens TD700

Have listened to a used Thorens TD 700 turntable and am thinking of buying. Would the arm, TP42 suit cartridge upgrade to Goldring 1042? Can the Funk Firm Achromat 5mm thickness turntable mat be used as an upgrade? Also the example I have listened to I can hear the motor if I hold my ear just above the turntable, best described as a slight electrical hum. Audible with lid on or off. Is this normal or should the motor be silent? Sorry so many questions but just returning to vinyl after 20 years or so of CD listening.

You can use the Goldring 1042 - classic cartridge that is well suited to the turntable. Use a 3mm Achromat to be safe.
