Finally, I've a weekend uncluttered with work, so I'll watch Le Quattro Volte (I'm not sure when I'll get the chance otherwise). I've got a stack of Blu-rays to get through, so perhaps a film marathon is on the cards.

Not the most interesting post ever, but there you go...

But informative.

I'll try to watch it tomorrow if I can stay awake, and without the distraction of my turntable, the next few weeks could be a good time to catch up on some movies.

I'd pre-ordered the steelbook blu ray of The Wicker Man about six months ago, watched it tonight. The vast majority of it looks absolutely stunning. Some of the dialogue is a little anaemic but the music is really crisp. The new cut is very interesting too, highly recommended to you guys who liked it 🙂

It's an inevitable purchase for me, but I'm waiting for a price drop.

I was under the impression that "the final cut" is the director's cut, with a few early scenes of Howie on the mainland taken out. Is there anything else that's different?

I'm sure I'll enjoy "Corn Rigs" and "The Landlord's Daughter" in lossless audio.

That'll probably be little compensation. At least we can discuss the film once we've all watched it.

This site has some good info on the differences: http://www.steve-p.org/wm/shortonly.htm

Looking at it, my DVD is probably of the 'short' version, so a fair bit different. The 'middle' version is shorter than the 'extended' version but still has some additional scenes, such as in the graveyard early in the film.

I heard Mark Kermode say recently (and it is if note he presents the first of the extras on the disc) that the director considers this the closest version to what had originally been intended, although there is still some lost footage.

There are some scenes which are obviously of much worse quality than the rest; those look to be additional to the 'short' version.

You can watch it whenever, so absolutely. Not best to do it tired, as it requires a little concentration I would say.

Btw I am not easily offended and have no emotional attachment to this film so people can be as frank as they like about it! :wall: 😉

I think most people have watched it, but I am still waiting to receive my disc. The estimated delivery date is 26th Oct, so still potentially another week to wait for me. I ordered the disc quickly, but the postal service seems very slow.

This delay may work out well for some members - I know I understood Survive Scene 5+ better, after watching it for the second time - so some members may want to take the opportunity of this extra week, to watch the film again.

The only thing not to do, is to discuss it on the forum, until I have seen it.

BBB - I also ordered a copy of Elling, so maybe we will also be able to discuss that film as well, in a couple of weeks.

Because the post seems so slow, might it be a good idea to choose next months film asap, to give us a chance to obtain copies ready for the first week of November?

The DVD I own includes the UK theatrical cut and the director's cut, with obvious fluctuations in quality between "original" and "rediscovered" footage. I've read around a fair bit and the final cut sits somewhere between the two, with no unseen material.

Several Wicker Man fans cite the 102 minute cut as the definitive version, which includes exposition on Howie's "pre-marital" status. (The argument being that the film makes less sense without this material.) I'm inclined to disagree.

All cuts of the film are perfectly comprehensible; and I'm generally underwhelmed when filmmakers spell things out that attentive viewers can pick up on without explicit signposting. That's one of the biggest problems with most horror remakes. All nuance is lost as themes are spelt out in such explicit terms that it insults the audience's intelligence.

As to whether "the final cut" is the definitive version of The Wicker Man, at least in terms of surviving footage, I'll have to watch it to make up my own mind.

Ben, there is nothing personal! 🙂

Hope you enjoy Elling, it's very different to SS5+.

I'm not certain whose choice it is after Ben, but I'm not against choosing the film so we can all get a copy ready to watch.

I'll try to watch LQV tomorrow, far too tired to attempt it tonight.

And I though you were running this show. :O

I thought it was me next, but I could be wrong. If it is my turn, I'd better have a quick think and a rummage.

I think you're 5th Strapped.

I may well be wrong, but as far as I can tell, the order is:

1. BBB

2. Ben

3. HFO

4. JD

5. Strapped

6. Mike

That's no problem. After much thought and disappointment at the availability and price of certain films, I'd finally decided on three titles, organised around a single theme. (All three are associated with a particular movement, but were produced in very different periods.)

However, one film I'd shortlisted receives a Blu-ray release next month, so it might be best to wait. I also wouldn't want to shake up the original order.

HFO, over to you...

It was agreed members would nominate in order. This was the member list BBB quoted on page 2:

Members List (so far)

Me

BenLaw

Strapped For Cash

Hi-FiOutlaw

John Duncan

Followed by Mike obviously.

BUT I think HFO summarised the strict joining order more accurately on page 3:

1-) BIGBERNARDBRESSLAW

2-) BenLaw

3-) HiFiOutlaw

4-) John Duncan

5-) Strapped For Cash

SO only way to resolve this... etc etc. Discuss? Casting decision by BBB as founding member?

I'm not trying to muscle in. I was honestly under the impression that I was next to nominate, though in retrospect I'm not sure where that idea came from.

I'm more than happy to wait.

So anyway, The Wicker Man, do the good guys win in the end???

To be absolutely clear, that's not in any way an anti-police statement, but a question regarding what Howie represents more generally, particularly in contradistinction to Summerisle inhabitants.
