Hey guys

I have finally decided to choose either the sony DH800 or the award winning denon 1910!! The problem is do i really need upscalling and upconversion when the only things for the moment that are going to be connected to it is my PS3 for games and blu-ray and my Xbox 360!! The main reason for the amp is going to be HD surround sound!

I am considering getting a skyHD+ box for my room and that is the only reason i have a split mind about which one to go for because i would love sky+HD in full 1080p!

Also i am thinking of getting a ipod dock as well! which is the best for either system?

Let me know what you think as i can get the sony 800 for £260 on amazon and the Denon for ~£430 on ebay new!

Well, you probably don't need to worry about upscaling as the upscaling units in AV receivers at that price are generally not so good. The Denon has a good one according to the WHF review, but having seen my friend's Denon, we couldn't tell the difference between the amp or TV upscaling the Sky picture. So it will also depend on what TV you have.

However, the Denon is a much better home cinema amp and will sound significantly better than the Sony in my opinion. Best bet is to get an audition of both and see if you think it's worth the extra on that basis alone.

issues with connections and stuff might go for the sony! don't care if it cant upconvert, will leave it to my ps3 to do that!!

Also i have the ps3 60GB do i need a optical cable?? or does it go through the Hdmi??

Difference between old and new slim PS3 is the way it sends the HD audio - the old models are unable to "bitstream" the formats i.e. send the Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio signals natively for the receiver to decode, whereas the new slim PS3 can do that. So with the older models you need to set the PS3 to decode the formats to linear PCM first. Either way, it all gets sent down the HDMI cable.
