Hi,

I'm looking at purchasing a second-hand Teac 300 series or a Teac 500 series. I have been told that both are excellent hi fi systems.

There is a substantial price difference, and was wondering if the jump from the 300 to the 500 is worth the extra money? i.e. is there are real difference in sound quality? Is there another hi fi I should be looking at instead that would provide better value for money?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Dave

How much more expensive is the 500 series? The 500 series was dubbed as the 'Reference' series, so it should be of premium quality. How much of that directly translates to the sound quality I don't know as I've never heard them.

A Google of the technical data should give you an idea of where the extra money is going. Do you need mini sized components? The Teac systems were very nice compact components, but you would open the door to much more choice and performance options if you could go the full size route.

There is not a significant difference between the two ranges from the brief look I've had. How big is the price jump between them? What are the systems you are looking at going for £££? and what do they consistent of? Are they complete systems with amp, CD, Tuner, speakers etc?

If you could provide more info there is more chance of giving you a more definite answer. :)

In my experience he may also have to swap out the wife/partner. I have a reference Teac cr-h255 that I have moved from the bedroom to the lounge and has lasted me for years. Sound is very flat and does well with the treble set to +2 and with small speakers an active subwoofer. Micro systems are beautiful to look at and as electronics get smaller and smaller I find it remarkable that full sized ("ugly") units are still going strong and we are left with the usual Teac vs Denon choice.

Thanks so much for your help and advice, guys.

The Teac 300 is selling for around £300 to £350 (without speakers).

The 500 series is selling for roughly £450-£500 (without speakers).

I bought a pair of Monster Clarity HD speakers last year, but have yet to really hear how good they are, as I need an amp for my Stanton ST 180 turntable.

It's the full matching set I'm after, and space isn't an issue, in fact, I quite like the size of the 500 series, but it's really the sound quality I'm after. For an extra £150, is it worth going for the 500 series instead? There are four components in the ones I'm looking at - amp, CD player, tuner, and cassette deck.

Once again, I'm forever grateful for any advice.

Dave
