What they suggest is just that, a suggestion. It will not work for all people or for all rooms.
I would feel free to experiment. Personally, with this type of speaker I'd have them closer together than shown in the diagram and less toed-in (i.e. with cross-over point slightly behind head). There are no hard and fast rules.
