Is it possible to use just 4 speakers for surround? Can receivers properly output to 4 or do you need the center & sub?

I listen to stereo music mainly but would like surround for dvds. I have floorstanders with two 8" subs which give me plenty of base alreaedy. I was thinking of getting a new receiver and just adding rear speakers. Would this work? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

For me the two most important speakers in a surround system are the centre and the subwoofer. I have floorstanders that give good deep bass but my subwoofer transforms all my speakers. The centre gives you the sound of all dialogue and is utmost important.

It will work though - set the receiver to "Centre - None" and the centre dialogue will just come out of the front pair instead, which might be an acceptable compromise for you.
