Hi, I’m thinking of upgrading my speakers and I’d like some advice. I’m currently using 16-year-old JPW AP3s (two-way, bookshelf speakers) alongside an Aura Evolution integrated amp, a Rega Apollo CD player, and a Rega Planar 3 turntable. Mostly I listen to punk/alternative, some of which is poorly recorded. And for the most part the AP3s sound great for this type of music. I’ve listened to some of my stuff on much more expensive Monitor Audios and the music becomes thin and trebly. However, I think I might be able to get an even “bigger” sound than I do with the AP3s with floorstanding speakers. I’d also love to have speakers that handle classical music really well (the AP3s aren’t great with classical on the whole). Is this asking the impossible? The prime consideration is speakers that give an exciting, upfront, musical sound with lots of depth, weight, and punch. For the right speakers I’m prepared to spend a reasonable amount. Of course I’ll audition a wide range of speakers and will be led by my ears, but I was just wondering if anyone had any hot tips for me to hunt down? Thanks!
