Very interesting article ElectroMan; well done. I think the mag should publish it as there must be lots of people out there interested.

However, I did offer a DIY story to the mag when building my own cinema, from scratch, on a small budget, but they didn't show any interest.

Shame - i'd read it!
Why not make a website and do your own publishing???

Octopo:Nice job. Did you end up stripping them of their innards? RIP Electroman's Chris Rogers.

No, I eventually gave them to a friend, who already had a pair of IMF transmission lines which. Although the IMF's were obviously much better made and finished than my Pro9TL's, I always thought the midrange sounded a bit 'recessed', i.e. not prominent enough and a bit swamped by the bass. The Pro9TL's weren't perfect (of course!), but I genuinely preferred the sound.

I agree - have you tried one of the other magazines, more given to DIY-type projects, such as Hi-Fi World?

I'm afraid we've come to the end of the photographs of these speakers, although I do have a picture of the amplifier that drove them, which I will post soon ...

Excellent thread, very interesting to see the process. Kudos ElectroMan.

Thanks for your comments folks, I think that you might have started something ElectroMan. I will look at my notes again and who knows, I might just create a website.

Great thread electroman, it's certainly kept me & i'm sure others entertained for the last couple of weeks, can't wait to see a photo of the amp.

Lovely thread.

I built my first pair of speakers from a Radio Shack speaker recipe book (Matin Colloms)?

Not as ambitious as those though. Just 4" bass/mid and 1" piezo tweeter with simple bottom port flare. Yours are big boys speakers. People must have gone 'Wow man, cool, that bass really flaps my flares'.

I've got a pair of passive bass radiator versions of the KEF 139 in mid 80's Carlton IIIs. They do look cool.

Re the earlier questions about transmission line design. Back in old days TL design was largely trial and error and the maths behind it not well developed. A transmission line guru by the name of Martin King has developed a set of equations and spreadsheets to make design less of a trial and eror business. There's some good info here and a couple of useful links at bottom of that page.

Cone materials have changed a bit too, with paper less prevalent now. new fancy plastics and metal drivers have become available.

I've just spent some time building new hifi racks to hone my woodworking skills. The thought of speaker building is very tempting, especially when I see threads like this. I keep telling myself I must resist. I love my current proper pair and already have 12 pairs of speakers. I've no use for a 13th. I just get these urges. Get me a psychiatrist!

Great thread electroman. The past two weeks have been, lets log in and see how far we are today then. Thanks for keeping it going mate, and for the wallpaper memories !!

This is the amplifier used to drive the speakers, a Technics SU-8800:

This was festooned with knobs and levers, all of which were very positive and made quite loud, and satifsying, sounds when operated!

It's sitting on a plastic-coated steel shelving unit (we knew no better in those days). At one point there was a brand-new top-loading Marantz CD player on the shelf above - which fell to the floor when I was attempting to adjust the shelf! But it still worked.

The shelves were sited in a corner, and you can see more nice 70's wallpaper in the background.

There is one final photograph to come, of the builder of these speakers when he was much younger (and had much more hair).

Looks like Wendover Woods near where I live too!

Lovely amplifier that - do you still have it?

Actually, it was taken in Iceland!

Unfortunately not, it 'went missing' when being couriered. I got £15 compensation from the courier company.

Fortunately, my insurance company paid out the full purchase price.

I can't remember what I replaced it with, but it was something much cheaper, either a Yamaha or a Nad.
