Speaker Positioning

Are there any general guidelines about how far apart speakers should be, and what does this depend upon ? Room size, speaker size, general listening volume ? I appreciate the value of trying out different positions and evaluating the results, but would like some general advice first. Thanks.

Generally in the space I'm in, I keep myself 1.5 times further from the speakers, than they are from each other and asdjust toe-in as necessary.
