Would I be correct in saying that many of today's speakers in my price range are designed more for home theatre multichannel setups and not two channel audio which is what I am looking for?

probably not.
plenty of good stereo speakers available within your budget although most American manufacturers do seem to concentrate on home cinema setups
No reason not to use them though

What are your thoughts on the Dyanaudio Excite 44 speakers? Not much out there in the way of reviews. Have found a new pair from a dealer within a couple of hours drive that I can go listen to for $2500 USD.

Good though the Arias are you are paying a bit over the odds because we can get them for $2410 in the UK however that's a good price for Dynaudios assuming it is a pair
