Sony STR-DA5400ES - 7.1 Home Cinema AV Receiver - Help please if you own one

Hi,

Not interested in 3D as of yet so have bought myself the amp I have been after for many months from ebay tonight for what I think is a bargain - £442. ( It is graded stock - a return with "slight sratches" but from a reputable dealer )

My only issue is, my tv is only 720p. ( Yes, I know it doesnt do the amp justice, plan to upgrade soon ).

Will this automatically upscale to 720p or will I have problems ?

I also once read that Sky HD has had issues sending surround through this amp - something to do with the audio delay ? Is this true ?

Finally, I have PMC GB1 front left and right, PMC DB1 Centre and Mission 752 Freedoms as rears ( Have not upgraded rears yet and cant part with these ). Which settings should I put the speakers on - I presume all large but please point me in the right direction. I have no sub as yet but intend to buy one soon - will I have issues with the auto calibration set up system ?

Alot to chew on, any help most welcome and do you love this amp ?

Thats a great price - a few scratches wouldnt bother me...

U can set the amp to 480/576/720/1080/i/p, auto and direct. I normally just leave mine on auto.

I have no problems with skyHD

Never tried the auto calibration without a sub - but i dont see it being a problem.

Ok, thanks for putting my mind at rest.

Can anyone from What Hi Fi ( or anyone else ) advise me on the speaker settings please ? Or will the amp do this on auto calibration when I run the set up ?

Yes it will but without a sub you'll need at least the front L&R set to large otherwise you'll get no bass at all. You'd probably want the centre set to large as well but it'll depend on how it handles it.
