I have had a letter from sky about 2 weeks ago saying that they would like to replace my Pace box. I then received a call saying that my 12 month guarantee is about to finish and would i like to pay £160+ for another 12 months.

I declined this as the letter asking to swap to a new box says I get a new 12 months guarantee with it!

Do they think that I would just accept what I am told on the phone and pay up?

Ummm, no - go for the new box, obviously...

In all probabllity the people phoning about the warranty renewal thing aren't in touch with the Pace box-swapping people, or could even be an outside company trying to sell you a third-party warranty.

Yesterday, having had the Sky engineer here most of the morning fighting a strange incompatibility problem with the box he was trying to install in place of my flaky Thomson, I had a phone call from someone asking if I still had the Sky service and if I was happy with it and was still subscribing and if I'd had any problems lately.

Left hand, right hand...

The phone calls offering this type of insurance seem to have all your details from sky but are an outside company.

An engineer call out from sky costs £65, so unless you are paying for multiple call outs, having the cover doesn't make any sense to me.

I refuse it every time I get a call.

I had a very similar call last week and came to the conclusion that it was actually a "phishing call" to find out whether or not I had a Sky box. Given that Sky claim that they don't pass your details to third party "warrenty" suppliers I was very surprised that I got several approaches about extending my warrenty shortly before the original one expired. I then remembered a phone call that occurred shortly after I had my HD box installed in which I was told that my warrenty was about to expire. I foolishly replied "Don't be so stupid I only got it last week". If anyone contacts you asking about your Sky service just say you don't have one, it won't be Sky calling you.

Andrew Everard:I wonder if you only get these calls if your dish is visible from the street?

No, our house isn't visible from the street (the street is half a mile away...) and I got a letter from them almost exactly 12 months after I got my original sky box.
