Have to say, that I really can't see pubs landlords being overly happy at the way 3d works in the long run or it being a long term success in pubs either.

Because if they give glasses out free, they will have to collect them back for future use (can't see Sky providing unlimited supplies of glasses) and if they charge for them, its going to be a real headache with people queueing up for drinks and glasses, and joe public being as tight as he is in the current climate won't want to pay £3-4 for a pair (as the cinemas charge), and I really can't see most punters remembering to take their glasses with them every time the go to the pub either!!

Its a good idea short term, but a non starter long term.

I've been wondering about this as well. The only thing I can see working is some kind of 3D TV glasses vending machine, a la cigarette vending machine, in the pub, maybe coupled with a slight downgrading of the quality and robustness of the glasses (to make them thinner when folded). Could then be dispensed for £2-4, with the pub maybe making a turn on them.

To make it slightly more eco-friendly, would need a re-cycling bin that would allow them to be sent back to Sky for re-packaging. Or maybe bio-degradable / recyclable...

Recorded, yes, but then neither the BBC or ITV have plans to go 3D, Sky don't have the rights, and AFAIK Eurosport, which will be showing highlights, don't have 3D plans either. So not too sure who'll be able to show it, at least in the UK.

In other territories, maybe...

And it looks like Sky's plan is to roll out a dedicated 'pub channel' first, then go with a public one later. Mind you, I guess that halo effect of having 3D TVs in pubs could pay off, in that those looking to buy 3D TVs may go for the ones they've seen in the pubs...

I often see strange looking TV pictures in the pub. HOWEVER, I don't think they're 3D, and almost certainly not due to anything Sky (or anyone else) is broadcasting.

so can i , what i cant figure out is why sky are so interested in getting this off the ground ?? er , wait now , i might , because they hope to charge a premium for their 3d coverage once (if) people have got used to it ??

theres one thing for sure , 3d is going to be expensive , but who for ??

Theyve done it for one thing and one thing only ~

get all the sports punters interested in 3-D tv via the pub so they buy one and they ultimately sell more sky boxes and have more people subscribing to 3D tv

oh yes , im sure sky wants 3d to be the talk of the town , millions of sky 3d adverts , coming to a tv near you soon ...

but will punters bite in a recession ?? and will pubgoers put up with having to wear glasses ?? i wouldnt like to put money on it either way ,but , i think it may be a few years before 3d starts filling coffers ..

Sky has to have something to stay ahead of the competition. They used to have HD, but now there's stuff on Freeview, Freesat and Virgin's HD content is expanding... The recent OfCom ruling's mean they can't charge a huge premium to others (BT/Virgin) for their Premium Sport / Film content so they want to sell us 3DTV (I keep hitting the Shift-key while typing "3" and getting "£" - isn't that amusing?) Yes, they want lots of people in pubs watching Wayne Rooney in 3D

thinking "Why can't I have that at home - and they can for the price of a new TV and a few specs... Oh yes and the (initially heavily subsidised) subscription to Sky's 3D channel...

I'm sure if Sky thinks that 3D TV is filling pubs more, they'll up the pub TV licence, again.

Yup, with Sky planning on 50 HD channels by the end of the year, one and a half channels on Freesat must be sending shockwaves of fear through the corridors in Osterley...

Virgin's got 6 - 6! and two more coming - woo-hoo!

But to be fair, Virgin does have more on-demand HD programming (including the on-demand / catchup TV)
