Hello all,

After months of anticipation I finally bought the squeezebox duet but I cannot set it up! I think it might be a problem with my wifi router but I am not sure. The first steps went ok: I could find the wifi network and the squeezebox receiver. Then problem is that the squeezebox cannot connect to the music source. I use the following set up:

- wifi router: D-link system DIR-301

- windows Vista

- Anti-virus: Avast

I have the same kind of issue when using winamp: I cannot access my music remotely.
Does somebody have a solution to this problem? Thanks a lot in advance!

arno - can you access internet radio using your squeezebox?

I had the same problem as you - I couldn't see my music library on Squeezebox but internet radio worked.

The problem was I had two firewalls enabled (Windows and Norton). As soon as I disabled the Norton then everything worked fine.

same thing with sonos. had to turn offt he avg firewall. or it couldnt see the music. everything else was fine.

the music folder is shared, the windows firewall is turned off however I do not know if there is a firewall with avast I am going to check it out latter

JohnDuncan:No mention of installing Squeezeserver here I notice...?

I've always found Squeezebox terminology a bit confusing - Squeezecentre?... Squeezeserver?... are they the same thing?

If so, I've made the assumption that the OP has installed Squeezecentre and scanned his computer to allow Squeezecentre to find his music.

Same thing - sorry, Squeezecenter is the current correct term i think.

Yeah, I'm just questioning that assumption since he didn't say it (still think the problem'll be the firewall though).

I have installed squeezecenter and i followed all the instructions: all was fine until i tried to connect the box with the music source. I do not have time now to make some trials but i do not see anyother firewall than the basic windows firewall, which was set up by squeezecentre to allow the connection withe box.

It may have failed. Turn off the firewall, see what happens - if music found, turn it on again (before the entire world ravages your hard disk*) and explore the firewall settings to see what's not letting you connect.

What antivirus software do you have (it could have a firewall in it)?

*this is a lie

Double check your firewall and see if your Avast anti-virus is also doing firewall duty. If so, turn off and let Windows do that for your pc. Also go into your settings and allow your firewall to let anything starting with Squeeze through it.

From the Squeezebox FAQs:

Windows: Windows XP Service Pack 2 turns on a built-in firewall by default. You will need to configure the firewall to allow access to Slim Server. To do this:

Go to Control Panel
Click Security Center
Click Windows Firewall under 'Manage security settings for:'
Click the Exceptions tab
You will then need to add three exceptions for these ports by clicking 'Add Port...':

Port number: 3483 (TCP) - Name: SlimServer Control
Port number: 3483 (UDP) - Name: SlimDiscovery
Port Number: 9000 (TCP) - Name: SlimServer Web
Third-party Firewalls: Examples of third party software firewalls include: Brickhouse, Norton Personal Firewall, Norton Security Center, PC-Cillin, BlackIce, McAfee Security Center, ZoneAlarm. You will need to configure your firewall software o r hardware to allow connections to ports 3483, 9000 and 9090 for both UDP and TCP connections. Refer to the instructions that came with your firewall for details.

Of no use to the OP. But just for balance. I bought a squeezebox duet today. my avi speakers hopefully coming end of next week. i had squeezecentre already downloaded. i didnt read the instructions. just plugged it all in. using pc active speakers in another room. the walkthru on the hanset took a minute and it worked straight off. as it kept saying. found so and so do u want to use so and so. i had my fingers crossed that it would stuff me in the end. but. no. it went perfect.

and the wife loves using it already. imagine when the avi 9.1s arrive shes going to be blown away. she hasnt heard them.

just to add im on vista

After some fiddling around I managed to connect the Squeezebox to the squeezeCenter via wifi however I cannot control the box with the remote: I have only "Playing now" and "Parameters" showing on my remote screen. So far I can only contol the music via the laptop, which is far from ideal. Thanks for your help anyway, it is getting better!

sorry for your troubles mate. i have no idea why it was so easy for me. im not tekky. and was really worried.

i was due a bit of luck tho.

Do you have an iPod touch or an iPhone?

get the App iPeng. trouble free controlling (ish).

I would recommend you sign up to the forum on slimdevices.com as there is a beginners forum there. Also, if you continue to experience difficulties, contact Logitech. It should be relatively straightforward but as with setting up any wireless device, there are a lot of variables that can complicate it.

thats the thing. its all the variables. when we tried the sonos 2 weeks ago. we realised that my speedtouch

modem/wireless router had no jack to plug it into. but we had a belkin wireless router in a box here knocking about from my wifes work. so we chained that in. sonos worked ok. but we left it in as for the firs ttime we seemed to be able to use all 3 laptops at once wirelesslly. whereas before it was connecting only one at a time.

when i pluged the squeezebox in. the handet found the speedtoch and the belkin. tried to connect to the speedtouch, but wasnt having any of it. but i then chose the belkin and it worked straight away.

so without what we did 2 weeks ago, im sure mine wouldnt have worked too easily either. but i dont really know how its working now either.lol

hello all,

And thanks for the feedback, unfortunately I do not have an apple touch or phone. I phoned Logitech support yesterday and apparently the problem was the anti-virus. I switched it off completely and then I followed their instructions: it worked well for some minutes but after a while the remote lost its connection and I had to restart and reboot everything (laptop, box and remote) for the system to work again. This happened three times in a row: so far I'm quite disapointed with this system, it is fantastic when it's working but so far this did not hapen very often . I will phone them again tonight to see if the problem can be solved. Thanks for all the contributions anyway!

visit the slimserver/squeezebox forum and you will see there are a number of people having issues with the Duet. which is why i decided not to get one but got the classic.

i had read that the system wasnt as robust as sonos, which sets up it,s own wireless network. and therefore not as good for multiroom. but as im only getting mine to send from the pc round a corner about 18 foot to the speakers. and it was a lot cheaper. i decided to go for it. I can understand your frustration. if i sit in the sofa in the middle of the room. about 8 foot from my router. the hand control works ok. tiny bit of lag if u ride it hard with clicking on a lot of things. but mostly fine. But if I sit up near the speakers on the other sofa, abut 14 foot away round a bend. it kepps dropping out. the music playes ok. fautless but the controller drops in and out.

apparalently it happens to a lot of people. so IMO, not much use in another room if its not stable accross over 12 foot round a corner. so theirs no point in me ever getting another reciever and using it in the bedroom. the handset will never work. there has been lots of bug fixes and firmware upgrades. but its still the weak part of the system apparently.

I have wired the squeezebox directly to my router now via an ethernet cable. I had to switch off my avast AV and the windows firewall for squeezecenter to detect the squeezebox... I turned on the firewall after detection though. So far it is working fine but it has been running only for about 40min. That range thingy can be a problem as the idea behind getting the duet was to be able to control my music wherever I stand in my flat... Anyway, thanks for the help.

i downloaded the latests version of squeezecentre. which in turn downloaded the latest firmware upgrade to my handset. it now works all round the ground floor. and has some reception upstairs.

I have squeezecenter 7.3.3 as well. Now with the squeezebox wired to the router it is working better. Squeezecenter detects the squeezebox without so much trouble however the remote still behaves randomly, which can be a pain. When the remote is not detected I have to switch it off, then play a song from squeezecenter with the laptop, switch the remote on again and pray for it to be detected. It is still better than what I got so far but I hope that it can still be improved...

The system is working now after some fiddling around with the windows firewall. The remote takes ages to detect the receiver though when I turn it on. Is that normal?
