I've had the above Sennheisers for nearly a decade now and I've never really had much need or love for them. To cut to the quick: now I'm looking for something better. Something that won't leave me completely disappointed when I compare them to listening to my speakers. I realise these are two very different ways of listening to music, but I find the switch to headphones (usual reasons: late at night, young family in bed etc), after I've had a few hours with the B&W's always feels unfulfilling. The obvious pairs that I've considered are the GS1000's and the similarly priced Sennheiser model. But do I really need to spend up to £1000 to get near to my B&W's? My headphone pre is a Musical Fidelity X-Can V8P. Rest of kit in sig below.

I'm afraid of the headphones I've heard, no matter how good, they all sound like headphones.

The only type that sound "speaker like" to me are my Stax SR-404 Limited electrostatics, that's in terms of imaging and having a reasonable depth to the soundstage.

Of course there are the discontinued AKG K1000 (literally a small pair of speakers) but I've had no experience of them and they need oodles of power.

I agree with lonely boy. Two very different ways of listening.

However, I've really enjoyed getting rid of my kit and just listening for a change, rather than be distracted by laptops, pcs, tv etc. so a headphone system is a very welcome change.
