Can you keep your dad's Eltax speakers? If so, have you instead considered buying some good stands for them? May be a more cost-effective upgrade?

I'd caveat Rob's earlier Mission 752 suggestion only to say that while they are superb in the right set up, you need to land the right set up to hear them at their best, otherwise, they can sound lean. I've used them in my current stereo for about two years now and they're excellent, however, it took until this January when I bought the Sansui amp for the "excellent" to happen. Until then they were "good" but missing something. Superb midrange, nice treble - the mesh dome metal tweeter is fine, just partner it carefully - but I'd been through about 6 amps or so before I landed on the winner. In fairness, some of this lies square at the CD player's door as it too is on the lean side.

Other options, do have a look at the Q Acoustics 1030i - they're a good brand to support I think; UK, some ex-Mission people involved somewhere along the line I believe and they turn out some very good speakers for the money you hand over. The 1030i has been discounted to around £100-120 depending on where you buy, so shortlist them if nothing else.

Used? KEF Q35.2s, Acoustic Energy AE109s or 120s (one extra woofer I think!), TDL RTL2 or 3, Mission 733/733i (the former has a mesh dome metal tweeter, the latter not) and Mordaunt Short's MS25i or the MS25i Pearls if you can land them - one of the other longstanding members on here landed the MS20i Pearls the other week for about £40 (delivery included) and rates them highly. I'd recommend his view given he's been using some decent Naim and B&W speakers of late. You'd probably land any of the used options I've mentioned from £50 (the Mission 733/733is) up to around £150 or thereabouts (for the rest).
