Just thought I'd bring to everyone's attention that Paramount have admitted that there is an audio sync error on the SPR Blu-Ray, and are offering a free replacement scheme. Details can be found on several other popular Blu-Ray and home cinema sites which I'll let you all find and read, and amazon and several other retailers have pulled the discs from sale. I personally haven't had the problem with the disc, but I'll take part in case I change my equipment and it becomes noticeable in the future. Number to call is apparently 08000-852-613 in the UK, the other details are on the other Blu-Ray sites.

That's correct.

PARAMOUNT HOME ENTERTAINMENT RECALLING SAVING PRIVATE RYAN SAPPHIRE SERIES BLU-RAY DISCS

Replacement Product to be Available at Retail by Tuesday, May 18

HOLLYWOOD, CA (May 12, 2010) - Paramount Home Entertainment today announced that it is recalling the Sapphire Series Blu-ray edition of Saving Private Ryan recently released in North America, the United Kingdom and the Benelux countries due to an audio synch error that occurred during Technicolor's authoring process. Although Technicolor employs comprehensive quality control measures, in this instance the issue was not detected prior to replication.

"Technicolor has been a valuable partner to Paramount Home Entertainment, and both Paramount and Technicolor are committed to providing the highest quality product to consumers," said Dennis Maguire, President, Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment Worldwide. "Our Sapphire Series was created to present our greatest films with the finest picture and sound quality available. Saving Private Ryan is a five time Academy Award© winning film including Best Director from one of America's most acclaimed filmmakers so we are recalling this edition to ensure that every Blu-ray disc honors Steven Spielberg's vision."

Technicolor has set up the following toll-free numbers for consumers who have already purchased the Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series Blu-ray, which provides details on how they can receive a replacement copy-US and Canada: 888-370-8621, UK: 08000-852-613. Consumers can also return the Blu-ray to the stores where they purchased the product to receive a replacement. Technicolor expects to have replacement discs available at retail no later than Tuesday, May 18.

Very interesting. How did this slip through their quality control?

I rented this and was glad I didn't buy it as the lip sync in the last half hour is indeed dreadful...

Just to add something to my earlier post, I've been doing a bit of experimentation, and the results suggest that even if you haven't encountered the problem, as I hadn't, it will be worth replacing your disc regardless.

My current set-up has the Blu-ray player decoding the HD audio, then passing it to the amp via multichannel analogue outs. When watching the problem section before, when the issue first arose, I did not notice any significant problem. However, after reading some posts on another site, and wanting to double check my copy before phoning the replacement hotline, I had a fiddle with some settings.

Testing it again using multichannel out, there was again, no real problem, though there were one or two instances that didn't look quite right. However, I then switched off my amp, and turned the volume up on my TV, letting the HDMI from the player to the TV carry the audio. Re watching the same section again, the audio was suddenly out of sync by miles in some places.

What exactly the problem is I'm unsure, but it suggests some issue when the audio is output via HDMI. What it also suggests is that even if you don't have the issue now, it will be worth changing your copy, as if you change your equipment in the future, it may become apparent for this reason.

I didn't notice the problem when I played it first time but as it's suggested it could affect other equipment I'm going for the replacement. If you want to e-mail rather than phone the hotline you can get the pre-paid return envelope by sending an e-mail to savingprivateryan.recall@technicolor.com

You need to include details of where you bought the blu-ray and ideally proof of purchase (not essential). You'll also need to include your name and address so they know where to send the pre-paid envelope.

Good on them for doing it still begs the question of how it managed to happen? Pity no-one is going to recall my HDDVD copy of one of my Bourne discs that has terrible lip sync when I use analogues (okay on optical / Standard def audio).

I've finally decided it's about time I got this. If I were to get it new from Amazon etc would I get the new problem free disk, or is it likely that the disks with the probs are still being sold ?
