Been trying it out Samsung the UE46F8000 and I think this is a keeper :)

Reflections still an issue, due to gloss screen, but not as bad as with the Panasonic for some reason. But I'll still probably remount and tilt the tele down (as was suggested here) a bit to get around that. Most importantly there are no big blooms of light from any of the corners. This is far, far better than the Panasonic offerings. Okay it's a couple of hundred more, but you can see straight away that the picture is amazing and black bars top and bottom are actually black! (setting is on medium) . No grey clouds to ruin the enjoyment. However, this isn't my decision alone (keeping the tele) so when my wife gets in from work later she'll have her say as well. Well, you never know what other people like and dislike. I predict it will be staying though.

Only downside to all of this swapping out is it has cost far more than I (we) ever intended spending on a tele to get a good picture. Quite a bit over budget. But I suppose we're going to have the tv for a good while.

I'll probably post again when we've lived with it a while and after I've had time to fully explore the features. Will then be able to properly identify the pros cons.

Hi Siuk

Glad to see you are getting on better with your new Samsung, sometimes you have to pay a bit more to get what you want, I think I over paid for my 55in Philips but as my last tv lasted over six years ( still works ), I won't be looking for a new tv for at least another five years or maybe longer, so the cost won't seem as bad.

Look forward to reading your experiences with your tv.

Happy viewing.

:)

Remind us, exactly which Panasonic set did you have previously?

Well, clearly your wife likes you, so you never know, she might like the new Samsung as well! :)

I've got nothing but positive things to say about my Samsung 55F8000

It's well worth the extra money over your previous Panasonic and suffers from none of the clouding/blooming effect and offers far better picture quality and catch up TV services but turn off the motion control and talk features in the menu as mine seems to recognise hand movements at odd times and thinks that the sound from my surround set up is trying to control the TV via voice which can be very annoying. Turn both off as they are gimmicks and the remote is far better at recognising voice commands anyway.

The F8000 is a fantastic TV and like yourself mine is a keeper for at least the life of it's 5 year warranty and I've not found anything in the last few months to change my mind, happy viewing and good choice of TV...I am a bit biased though

Yeah, I have also come to this conclusion, macdiddy. :) We paid a thousand pounds for a 32inch CRT (Hitachi) when they came out and so putting it in perspective I suppose the price of this one is about right.

Yeah, absolutely! I'm at home with the ruddy flu today so have been slobbing it in front of the new tele, and it is miles apart from the Panasonics in terms of picture quality and features, and doesn't have the issues you mention. I didn't realise just how mediocre the Panasonic was until I'd watched a film on this TV. And I can't see this going anywhere either. :)

Yes, to both your recommendations. :) Turned them off. Also used these picture calibration settings that I found at a testing site:

Picture preset: Movie

Backlight 8

Contrast 92

Brightness: 46

Sharpness: 0 [10]

Color: 50

Tint: G50/G50

Picture size: Screen Fit

Dynamic Contrast Off

Black Tone Off

Flesh Tone 0

Color space Auto

Gamma 0

Color tone Warm2

Digital Clean View Off

MPEG noise filter Off

HDMI Black level Low

Motion Plus Off

Cinema Black Low [medium]

R-Offset 25

G-Offset 24

B-Offset 25

R-Gain 26

G-Gain 22

B-Gain 28

Seem to be about right. How do they compare to your settings, Oldboy?

First TV I tried was a LG 47LA740V from A.co.uk and that was just awful. Then I went to John Lewis and tried two TX-L47ET61B TVs before trying the TX-L47DT65B. Not impressed to say the least!

Oh, and  I hope she does too. ;)

Those settings are a long way off from mine. I have had my TV calibrated by a THX engineer so know my settings are as accurate as they can be and they differ greatly from those you have posted above.

The big problem with any posted settings is that they only suit that particular person in their environment, there are so many variables when it comes to calibration...you have tolerences in manufacture which make every TV from the same range differ slightly, your viewing conditions such as natural light levels and ambient light and the type of lighting you use at night. Even your viewing position can affect calibration and don't forget you need 2 calibrated modes for daytime and evening viewing along with 3D.

What I can say though is that your backlight levels seem about right as mine is set to 8 for evening viewing (9 for daytime), sharpness is correct at zero and colour is correct at 50, tint is set correctly and colour tone is also correct at warm 2.

Brightness and contrast are a way out from my settings though along with gamma and white balance, clour space should be set to custom and calibrated which you can't do yourself without a colour meter and software and 10 point white balance should be on and calibrated too which requires the same tools to do.

HDMI black level should be set to normal and cinema black set to low as going any higher than that starts to crush black levels of the picture. You have at least got all processing off which is great as you don't need them, if motion does become an issue then only use the Clear setting to smooth things out a little as it doesn't introduce too many unwanted side effects but as ever never use it with 24p movie content.

Unfortunately the F8000 contains several calibration menus that can only be calibrated accurately if you have the correct tools at your disposal and a degree of understanding in professional calibration which is why I got an engineer in to calibrate mine, although it cost £225 it was money well spent as the picture I get is brilliant now and far superior to any out of the box settings or anything posted on the net. I should also point out that Samsung veers towards a very strong blue tint to it's pictures that is not natural and can only be dialled out by using the advanced calibration menus, the difference is night and day stuff once it's done as the cool tone is dialled out making for a far more natural picture.

Lastly...there is little point in me posting my calibrated results for the reasons I oultined at the start but as I have said there are a few things you can change and if you have a THX dvd (such as Star Wars, there are many others too) then you can get the brightness and contrast far more accurate with very little effort but the colour requires a lot more effort and knowledge and is best left to a professional to calibrate.

Hope that helps and read through this thread on the arguments for and against calibration as my results are in here of my 55F8000 calibration:

it would drive me nuts as well, but I could imagine the wife trying to figure why the tv keeps turning itself off, would be funny for while anyway

John Lewis just came up trumps. Yes! Price matched the tv saving a significant amount off the total cost. £40ish extra instead of hundreds. Very happy indeed. Haven't looked at it again since Saturday as I've been in bed. Soon as the [no revolting details] ends I'll be able to take a better look. Glad John Lewis decided to honour the Price match after all. Fair play to them.

Yes, that's correct, except you'll have to add £30 delivery charge to that and then the difference between JL and the Total Digital price is what you'll get back...if you're thinking about it  So a pretty hot price really, for such a good TV I mean.

How difficult was the pm with JL? I've just put one in this afternoon and hoping for a response within 24hrs!!

Total Digital have the tv at 1217 now so you may be due some more discount if you're still within the 28days.

Did you go direct to customer service or a local store? I'd really appreciate some assistance as I'm not holding out much hope that they will agree to the pm initially based upon the explicit criteria stated on there website!

I really want this tv....

cheers

Hi submitted the price match details via JL's online form. Just waited for a reply then. About 36 hrs I think. Wasn't aware you could submit a pm again once the item had been price matched. Is this correct?

I've done it once, back in 2011.

They price matched Curry's on a TV, and then 3 weeks later Comet were offering a similar deal but with a free BluRay player and 2 pairs of 3D glasses, I re-submitted the form and they called me to say they would match it.

I had to 'buy' the free items, and then when they had been delivered I had to call them and they refunded me in full.

Yes you can up to 28 days after purchase and they will price match any deal or price you can find, you can submit it in the same way as you did previously. Yet another reason why it's a good idea to shop with John Lewis :)

@dinglebin I use these wall brackets:

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-SUPER-SLIM-ARTICULATED-TV-BRACKET-32-55-TVs-/151159871277?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_TV_Wall_Mounts_Brackets&hash=item2331d4972d

No issues with them at all, and they are super slim!
