JohnDuncan:I used to be an IT contractor. All I cost to make was a Pret sandwich, loads of coffee and a one day travelcard. My markup was about 3000%.

Ssssshh!!!! Stop telling everyone!

You got Pret sandwiches? How the other half live!

Do you mean those things are for sale??

I thought the RA catalogue was some sort of joke mag! Chuckled my way all through it.

It's a bit reminiscent of the Kaleidoscope catalogue. Full of stuff you never knew you needed

I'd like to see Russ Andrews on Dragons Den...

"So you spend nearly as much as the electrical item you've just bought on a bit of wire to plug it in. When it already comes with everything needed to make it work in the first place?"

"...and you make a margin of how much? I'd like to make you an offer."

And the Porsche toaster - only £99.99, but then does include features such as "Crumb tray" and "Cancel button" - whoa there!

I'm an owner, along with the matching kettle.... And the knives......

I am confused as to why anyone would think £99.99 was expensive for a toaster. Have you not seen the price of Dualit toasters?

I never said it was expensive. Though it's only a two-slice - my Dualit 4-slice is better value (even though I spent the first month calculating how much each slice of toast cost)...

Well one national newspaper columnist was vexed enough about cheap toasters to write an entire piece about one last week

Is this the point where I admit my toaster cost £5 in the Woolworths closing-down sale? And I'm still chuffed at picking up a new iron from John Lewis (ex display) for £9? Once a Yorkshireman...

I hadn't until now, but I still think £99.99 is expensive for a toaster...

I bought a toaster from Woolies too. It was also £5 in the closing down sale. Unfortunately the closing down sale was the week after I'd bought mine at full price.

I've had a couple of their kettles, neither lasted much more than a year. And despite the cost and supposed build quality, they're seemingly 'unrepairable', though you can have 40% off a new one. Maybe that's their business plan, make a bomb-proof toaster so that you have to keep buying new kettles to match it

Why do toasters have settings that go up to 'five' when setting the dial to 'three' burns the toast...?

Should I be using a mains conditioner?

An in depth editorial next issue would be most enlightening... Perhaps the next 'Big Question'?

You are right about the kettles. The toasters are a commercial product - you will often see them in hotels & guest houses and are difficult to wear out in a home environment. The kettles, coffee machines etc were bought in to capitalize on the success of the toaster as a style item and are not of the same quality.
