We send the Halloweeners away and tell them to come back with a guy. We offer them £5, rather than a 'Penny for the Guy'. Still waiting for our first winner.
I don't get this paganism, why can't we teach our kids to participate towards something that is of value?
Anyway, I don't see much trick or treating these days.
Few years ago on Halloween, there was a group knocking at my door.
I open the door, I flipped over my cloak,
I said
GOOD EVENING
the kid screamed for his mummy.

What’s wrong with it? Is it really any worse than believing in an imaginary, all-powerful, omnipresent deity?
Actually yes it is very different. However, this is neither the time or place to begin a theological debate.
However, one thing I will say is this.
People in general, having grown up in societies with Christian based ethics from which we have all benefited, are taking the benefits of those Christian based ethics for granted.

That is why I side track, Friesiansam response, talk to me about cables, talk to me about the geopolitics I don't mind but religion, I think best left alone. Notwithstanding, you know, everyone has a view and it should be respected.

Hidden standby power consumption.
OK when there's a red light showing users - they then choose whether they want the convenience of standby.

But my paper shredder; no lights, not shredding....but still plugged into a live socket and drawing several watts.

Before I fitted an accessible switch, my washing machine was completely 'off' with no lights.....but drawing 8 watts, for 8,760 hours a year.

Might be worth checking the hidden consumers costing you money (even if you're happy to leave hi-fi / TVs in standby).

Our washing machine does have a power on and off switch, albeit an electronic one. I haven't tested it to see if it draws current though.

If it is an electronic on / off, then you can be sure it is using a few watts, even when 'off'.

Multiply those few watts over a decade or more and it's well worth arranging for a genuine off switch (if yours isn't currently accessible).

👍From spec sheets:
Standby: Amp - 0.2W / CDP - 0.3W / Turntable - 0W / TV - 0.3W**

On: Amp - 130W / CDP - 47W / Turntable - 5W / TV - 170W

** strangely the TV consumes 0.25W even when switched off! And it would appear that it is greener to play LPs than CDs 🙂 vive le vinyl revolution!!

Age is also factor!

The regs regarding Standby power usage were first introduced in around 2008 IIRC, so anything pre 2008 Standby consumption will be much higher.

TVs don't have mechanical switches these days (if at all), and therefore require power to operate.

Duracell alkaline batteries! When they get to the end of their life they leak big time. They have almost destroyed very valuable items when I've forgotten where I installed them. I'm sick of them. Never had a leakage problem with similar freebee single use batteries from Panasonic or Toshiba, just Duracell.

Some years ago I ditched single use AA/AAA batteries and went the rechargeable route. Now replacing those with Panasonic Eneloop Pro rechargeable's and they're excellent 👍

There was a time when Duracell promised to pay for anything their leakage damaged.
Not Anymore.
