I have had a Planar 3 since around 2000, with the old RB200 arm, and it has always been great with the rest of my vintage kit. The sound has been a bit distorted since I moved the hifi, and when I investigated, the connections from the deck seem to be the problem. This seems to be a common fault, and I have seen companies replacing the wires for around £150. I'm not exactly flush at the moment, so was wondering if anyone has experience of this, and given the potential for other costs on an old turntable, would a similarly priced second hand Project deck be a better option?

Although I used to have an RB200 arm, I can't remember the wiring.

But I suspect you've got the moulded plugs - and the point where the cable enters the plug is quite possibly where there's a break (in the fragile inner signal core).

If you (or someone you know) could cut the plugs and about 3 inches of cable off....solder on new plugs, I think you might well cure your problem.

Whereabouts are you based?
