Hi all, I am currently looking for a Nait 5i (italic) to accompany my 3 or 4 month old CD5i. I am never quite sure about the rules around advertising and mentioning outlets etc, so will just say that a well known hifi specialist currently has a set of ex demo Nait 5i2's selling for £650. Do you think this is a reasonable price given theyre around £765 new?

Wondering whether to haggle or not or whether this is a reasonable price to start with. Any thoughts?

Offer em' £600. That's still reasonable in my books. Make sure it has full warranty tho..

Naim gear seems to hold it's value very well. However, it's still essentially secondhand gear. I'd agree with jules - £600 is still a pretty high percentage of the RRP for a new unit.

For the 115 price difference I would rather buy a new one. Given it is a very popular model, it may have seen many hours of demoing by many different people, possibly not all as carefull as you would be yourself. Would probably even prefer to buy from a private owner, considering people are in general very carefull with their own stuff, although a dealer warranty is helpfull.

Give Gary at Analogue Seduction a call and ask for the best price he'll do on one if you go for mail order, i.e. not auditioning. I have no idea what he might offer but the price I was offered when the 5i just came out was very good indeed.

Hmm thats a good point. I wouldnt mind betting its the exact same one I demoed a while back. I guess the warranty is the key.

Thanks Igglebert. Will give it a try. I guess you can recommend this guy then?

I bought 'opened' Nait 5i/CD5i for £1494 instead of £1660 (10 percent off).

Probably not even 'ex-demo'. Just happened to be the only ones in the shop and more examples were on back-order and not due in the shop for a couple of weeks. I had already budgeted for £1660 so when the dealer offered 10 percent off I jumped at it.

Not a mark on them. and everything else in the boxes (remotes/manuals, leads etc) all sealed.

Full guarantees naturally.

I wouldn't pay more than 70% for anything ex demo, ever. At this level the dealer is still making a very small profit and they have had all the people in listening to demos for no cost (except staffing, electric etc)

Joel... Hello dealer my good man. Please can you unbox a very large amplifier for me? It must be silver and look like my CD player.

Dealer... Certainly sir. The ChocoSmooth Velvetwarm MKIII arrived this morning i'll get one unpacked.

Joel.... Thankyou.

(4.5 hours later after an extremeley lush demo of Joel's favourite Enid track)

Joel... Excellent. It is indeed righteously smooth. I'll take it. Here is 70 percent of the price.

Dealer... Eh?

Joel.... You opened the box and plugged it in and played it. It is therefore an ex-demo amplifier. It has ceased to be brand-new.

Dealer... But...

Joel.... Don't bandy words with me vile capitalist. You only deserve a small profit. Give me a 30 percent discount or I will take my enormous jar full of 1p and 2p coins elsewhere and don't imagine for a moment I am going to help you count them. Oh yes. One last thing. I want you to part exchange these only slightly burnt Kudos speakers.

Thing is on fleabay these things still go for between £450 and £650, so as long as the warrenty starts from the day you buy it. You wont have to run it in neither.

Naim Audio's warranty starts from the day it's manufactured. So if it's been on demo for 12 months, there is 12 months warranty left. Naim can't be mail ordered, so any units bought on Ebay won't have a warranty.

Chebby has a point. But to add to that, there's another point to be made.

If 70% was the expected deal for ex-demo stock, that would devalue the second hand value of that manufacturers equipment. If people can get ex demo at 70% with a years warranty, what are people then going to pay for used with no warranty? 50%? 40%? There's already a retailer screwing the market for a well known electronics brand, which doesn't do any favours for the owners who've bought full price - they now stand to lose much more than they'd expect if ever they come to sell and upgrade.

Naim Audio has always had a healthy used market - so 10-15% off ex demo is a good guideline to keep that up. When I part with my cash for something, it's peace of mind to know you're not going to end up losing the majority of it's value when you come to sell it on to upgrade after all, getting a good price for your used unit always goes to fund it's relacement.......

Big Chris:Anybody else really want to listen to the ChocoSmooth Velvetwarm MKIII?

I've already got some similar sounding equipment so I will pass.

Mr Chebby, every dealer will bargain, it's all to do with supply and demand. If there's a waiting list for a piece of equipment then you ain't gonna get a discount.

I got my Kudos for £1,400 with less than 12 hours playing time on them (RRP £1,950).

I got my Unison Research CDE for £1,375 about 9 months of ex-demo use. It was the review sample so it may even be the one pictured on this site. That's about half price even including the wooden remote.
