PS3 HDMI into Denon AVR4308a & Samsung LCD

I've been using PS3 direct through 1.3 approved HDMI cable with great video results- Blu-Ray & upscaled DVD. Last week I bought a Denon AVR4308a, which plays CDs from Denon CD player & shows all menu options - so connections presumed ok. When I switch to DVD input, the display remains, but as soon as I switch the PS3 on, the screen display goes off / black, and no sound can be heard. Any ideas ? The PS3 is set to Auto video options. I'm not using the optical / TosLink, just HDMI from PS3 to Denon, & HDMI to the TV. Any ideas ?

What's the TV? Could be that an HDMI CEC command - such as Bravia Sync or Viera Link - is telling the PS3 to output sound and vision straight to the TV, not to the receiver.
